My ol dog is pushing 12 years old. When he gets up from napping he looks like a stove up 90yr old man. He jumped out the truck with me yesterday, hit the ground and I had to help him up.

Talked to my vet about it and he says just to give him some ibuprofen once a day. Talked to another vet who suggested against it and told me no one should ever self medicate their animals.

Personally, I don't see the big deal with it if it helps control his pains. What says the OB?

I give my dogs Ibuprofen as needed. Don't see the big deal. I would always check with my vet, but I don't see an issue with that at all.

What exactly did the 2nd vet suggest in this situation?

I don't have a strong opinion either way if you know what you're doing, but case in point I've always heard ibuprofen is toxic to dogs.

I've always heard ibuprofen can be toxic to dogs and cause ulcers in their stomachs. Baby aspirin is what is usually recommended for pain.

well if your vet told you to do it its not really "self medicating" is it?

why did you ask another vet after your (the dogs) vet said do it?

As two more and you might get two different responses.

give the dog some ibuprofen if you think he needs it. just make sure you get the dose right

or spend the bucks for an Rx canine NSAID

Vet told us that older larger dogs (labs, etc.) can handle one 200 mg tablet of ibuprofen daily and small dogs (yorkie, dashund, etc) should be given 5 mg to 10 mg children's liquid ibuprofen. Has worked for us over the years's

dosage info

My understanding is that dosage is key. 200mg sounds about right for a large dog, read something like 4-5mg/pound. Supposedly the worse pain med you can give a dog b/c it can easily be given in overdose quantity. BUT that could also be pharma companies wanting you to buy the specially formulated canine versions of pain meds for pets...

Second vet said he should be prescribed the appropriate medication. I know him, but don't use him and just happened to run into him so I questioned him about it.

My vet said the same thing about the dosages, and he knows my dogs very well. He said 200mg or under he should be fine.

He (the dog) is a trooper! Been snake bit three times, twice by copperheads, beat cancer and now is just living the dream. I'm new to this or I would post a pic.

From someone who grew up self medicating cattle and other livestock, vet #2 wants you to haul the dog in so he can bill you.

I thought this was going to be about animals that seek out and find medications on their own. Like dogs eating grass when their stomachs are upset.

I am disappoint now

This. As long as you know what you can/can't give dogs, i don't see what the difference is between them and a human. As long as his problems have been correctly diagnosed.

ETA - have never given my dogs Advil, always aspirin. They sell Dog Aspirin at walmart, so it can't be that bad, right?

Hope your pup feels better. Some of the rX meds really do help with arthritis and such.

I think it's fine if you do your homework.

I have a cat that got a terrible infection on its neck. Didn't want to pay a vet bill for a cat so I self medicated. Divided a 500mg amoxicillin pill into 12? parts and gave him one part every day for week. Infection started healing in short order. It was a nasty infection too. Like had him laid up infection that could be smelled when I got near him.

well if it helps their pain- that's good
if it maybe helps their pain and shortens their life- that's good too

he obviously would like you to donate some $ to him.

I know many people who do it. My cousin is a vet tech and my sister is finishing up vet school as we speak. Both of them have suggested I give my dog ibuprofen or benadril before

How on earth did you manage that? I can barely break one in 2 equal parts.

I'm not a vet. My dad is. He says no to anything but baby aspirin.

I had an older dog get in a bad way like this one time. I changed her food and treats to those with glucosamine and chondroitin and supplemented with similar pills (Cosequin). She recovered most of her joint and spine flexibility and was a much happier dog after that.

She was my wife's dog when we met, and my wife kept her in the divorce. The fricking bitch.
