I live on a river and have had a few gators hanging around the pier in the back yard. They seem to have no fear and come right up to you like someone has been feeding them. It wouldn't bother me that much but I have a 2 yr old lab who is my best bud and he just happens to be very curious. I'm pretty sure you can kill them if they are a nuisance on your property. Is this true? Are you supposed to call WLF after "a friend" blows his head off? I've hunted them in season and have no problem "letting a friend" blow their head off if it means keeping my dog safe.

FWIW the biggest one I've seen is about 6' long. Supposedly the roommates have seen a bigger one.

Any thoughts?

I don't think you can do that.

You call LDWF, they issue a tag to the gator nuisance guy in your area. He comes and kills the gator and sells the hide and meat to get paid for his time. We had a 8'er hanging out on the Diversion and he was removed about about 2 months.

Is there no law about killing them if they are a nuisance on your property? I could have sworn I've heard that before.

The bottom line is if there is a gator threatening my dogs life my friend is going to put a bullet in said gator's head.

this is the correct answer...this is why LDWF hires nuisance guys...don't be the guy that gets thrown in jail for something that is a phone call away and free

My friend had a 9 footer in his pond, he called the LDWF and they told him to kill it. It was pretty good eating.

Sounds like he wants to kill it himself and argue that he was in danger.

Gators have a quarter sized kill zone on the top of their head, but Willie is able to hunt by himself and handle the 900lb beast's line while he is thrashing about and biting holes in the boat, but he is still able to hold the rifle steady and hit the kill zone, and haul the 900lb beast into the boat with one hand.

That is what I have learned from swamp people.

Don't think it's legal but if my dog is in danger I'd probably be skinning a gator.

My property is teaming with gators and I have 2 retrievers that love to swim. I would never consider shooting one. I love those dogs.

Not sure about LA, but in MS a private pond is treated very differently than a river. Anything indigineous to the pond is the owners property, things living in the river are owned by the state.
