nitro trailer breakaway hook issues
Posted by rgh1217 on 6/6/12 at 12:52 pm00
The breakaway hooks on our nitro boat trailer are frozen solid. maybe from saltwater. Regardless they will not move an inch. I even hooked them up and unmounnted the hitch from the trailer and pulled it with the truck. boat rolled but hooks stayed didn't extend at all. I've used wd40 and several anticorrosive solvents and sprayed as much as I could into the housing of the hooks. any ideas? anyone else have this issue? only solution I can come up with now is replacing the whole swing away tounge.

why would you have to do that, just cut the chains off and put on new ones

Breakaway chains. When if ever the trailer would come undone from the hitch, these chains extend and engage the trailer brakes. but they can't do that now because they are stuck. It's a fancy trailer. sorry

Tie a strap to the back of the trailer and hook another truck to it and pull both ways. Something will give
The trailer on my 1985 Cajun 18' Cajun Fish/ski had breakaway hooks. When my dumbass roommate forgot to lock the hitch, it came undone at 55mph near Sieper. i hit a bump, and the boat starts swinging on the chain, until one of the breakway hooks BROKE, then the whole boat, motor and trailer passed my truck in the passing lane, then went into the ditch. Frigging breakaway hooks could have killed someone.
