So for 5 years I have mowed my centipede grass with a push mower.

Yesterday, I cut it for the first time with my new ZTR and now I have ruts in my yard from where the mower passed.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Baton Rouge. Yard seems pretty dry though. In fact, I have several dry spots showing in the yard.

gotta think about the difference in weight between a ZTR and push lawnmower

When and how? When you turn? Is it just spinning out the grass in certain spots, or is it actually ruts?

What size mower? We've got a 72" deck Kubota and it doesn't rut the field.

Take it easy. Go slow don't mow it like you just robbed a bank. My dad owns a lawn service and I worked for him for many years. If you turn quick and mow fast it will leave ruts in the yard and tear it up.

Yeah slow is key. I've driven my jeep across the yard and didn't leave ruts.

I have been driving slow because I am not comfortable with speed since this is my first ZTR.

It's rutting up in the straight aways.

I have the Gravely ZT X 42 inch.

What type of grass and how old is the lawn?

May be just a heavy thatch layer if this is an old established lawn. And the heavier mower is sinking a little.

Does it look really thick with thatch?

That may not be the answer just coming up with ideas.

Also check the tire pressure if you haven't already. And make sure to more different directions, not following the same ruts. The problem may correct itself in time.

That's all I got for you.

Just an idea could be wrong. Maybe let some air out of the tires??

It is very thick with thatch since this last cut was only the second this season.

Tire pressure is an even 20 in all 4 tires.

I am hoping that it evens itself out because this mower cost a lot of "wife points" and the yard looks like crap.

IIRC Hustler recommends around 10 in my tires.

I sold my ZTR and bought a Honda push due to ruts. It could be in the middle of a drought, and I would have ruts in my dead dry grass. My yard is small enough that I enjoy pushing it and looks much better.

do Y turns, not Z turns
if you drive it like a skid steer it will rut the yard

Might be time to aerate and then top it off with sand, should help with the ruts and also the lawn itself.
