New to the OB- Buying a Shotgun

I am looking into buying a shotgun for home defense and maybe some hunting. I am looking at the Mossberg basic 12 gauge. Is this a good general shotgun? I have heard good things from some friends.
I am not much of a hunter, but want to get one that I can use otherwise if I want to. Also, what is a good shell to stock up on?

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. We need to add 'I want a new shotgun' thread to the FAQ.

Exactly. Even for lower end shotguns, Mossbergs ain't it. Remington 870 (older type as Nico alluded to) or Benelli Nova pump (if you're going newer).

Nah. Been a fisherman all my life. Never really hunted or got into the shotgun game. I came to the OB for opinions. Damn, maybe I should have just gone to the OT for this crap

My advice is there for your taking. Mossberg is crap. Go Remington or Benili IMO.

Get some 3", 4 steel shot for ducks.

I got this one for HD -
Mossberg SA-20 20G Tactical
...primarily for the wife and kids to be able to handle. We start shooting and training this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.
My wife is not comfortable at all with firearms, so I am hoping that the lower kick on the 20G suits her well. We shall see.
