I'm relatively new to South Louisiana (lived here 2 years) and some of my co-workers have me convinced to try my hand at some crabbing. I live in Lafayette and was wondering where the best places to go around there are and what kind of equipment I would need. Also any tips of tricks you guys could give me would be great.

What type of crabbing do you plan to do? I've been a part of it 3, maybe 4 different ways.

1) no boat, off of a dock, or even sometimes side of a road with turkey necks tied to string. Throw turkey necks in water and let sit on bottom. When you see string pulled tight, crab is trying to take off with neck. Slowly retrieve string and scoop with net. Very fun as a kid and effective.

2) same concept, but instead of tying string off to dock or tree branches, we would set out bamboo poles in the surf on the beach in Grand Isle (crabs run the beach certain times of year). Two poles with a line between them. Multiple lines with turkey necks on the bottom. Walk the line checking each neck. Literally caught ice chest of crabs inot an hour and a half before. Get to hang out and drink beer.

3) using crabbing nets. Certain type of net with bait in the middle that sits on bottom. Put it under a float and set up in a shallow canal. Must have boat. Ride up and down canal checking each net. As you pull up on net, you catch any crabs eating your bait.

4) just set out "chicken wire" crab traps (follow recreational fisherman laws), wait overnight, collect them.

As a kid, and even an adult hanging out at the beach, the first two were my favorite. 3 works well, but if I'm making a trip out in a boat, I'd rather be fishing. 4 allowed us to go fish and check the traps after, but is not really active crabbing.

Boat or no boat? I know several people have been catching well in Rockefeller. Having a boat allows you to get to the weirs and makes it a bit easier but tons of people still catch off the side of the road.

To investigate blue crab movements in the Gulf of Mexico, we will be tagging and releasing 31,000 crabs throughout the bays, estuaries, and offshore waters of the Gulf. Our tags are orange 1? x 2? plastic rectangles wired around the crab’s spines. There is a $5 or $50 reward for each reported tag.

I've thought about trying to catch a few for our low country boil we're doing at the beach in Ft. Morgan.

Can these little buggers be caught at the marina off of Tacky Jacks on the bay side? Surely there's crabs down there when the charters clean fish. No?
