Saw his head poking up out of my woodpile. Orange/black. Could be yellow/black, but I think orange. Head looked round, not triangular, but I only caught a glimpse. Sorry, that's all I have to go on. I looked up Louisiana snakes, and nothing was a close match. TIA

Was the top of the head patterned/orange & black or was the top of the head black and the bottom orange/yellow?

How big? Any water close by?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but I think it would need to be somewhat close to water in order to find amphiumas.

There's a creek on the back of my property within about 50 feet of where I saw it, but the creek is dry right now. I think it was top black/bottom orange as best I remember, but not 100% sure. It was a fairly big snake based on its head. Not a coral snake, in other words.

You sure it was a snake? I have a bunch of very large skinks around my place that have orange heads for part of the year. Broad headed skink

Definitely snake. I looked up mud snake and it looked a lot like that, so until I get a better look at it, I'm going with that hypothesis.

Sounds like a mud snake, as jorcan said. Any ditches close by? You can often find them near/in ditches. They can get pretty big, and look kind of fat sometimes. Harmless.

As much time as I've spent outdoors I've only seen one mud snake in my life. I'm kinda fascinated by them
