For the record I am not proficient with firearms. I am scheduled to take basic handgun safety and then will take the concealed carry course. I know that I need the proper training before I can safely carry and want some advice on what I should be looking at.

need more info like what you doing most with it?
concealed carry?
target shoot?
self-defense?

etc...

That will narrow down your search depending on caliber, size, full or compact, how many rounds it'll hold, etc

there's no "perfect" answer, just more info to lead you into a good initial decision.

(That's why you will continue to buy many different handguns in the future !)

Concealed carry. Self defense mostly. Looking for something small and fairly simple to use.

IMO:
.380 is small and enough to get someone off you in a situation. (I have the S&W .380 bodyguard) no complaints but I know its not everyones favorite.

if you want little bigger load, look at the 9mm...
S&W M&P shield is a good carry size
cannot go wrong w Glock

S&W airweight .38+P if you wanna go revolver. comes hammerless for less moving parts, but only 5 rounds.

Common advice on here is to start out with something more closer to a full sized weapon. After training and time, then you work your way to a concealed carry weapon if you decide its needed later on.

I'd recommend a Glock 17 or 19, Springfield XDM 9mm, or a HK VP9 is a popular recommendation as of late.

Glock 43 or Walther PPS M2. They are both very reliable, pretty easy to shoot, and thin so easy to conceal/carry in waistband. Buy a kydex holster for either on ebay. The concealed carry course will probably be a basic handgun safety course too so you probably don't need both.

Go to a gun range that lets you rent guns. Talk to someone there and tell them you are looking to buy your first handgun but want to shoot different types first to figure out what you want. Then shoot as many guns as you want until you find one you like.

I would shoot both a revolver and a semi and decide which route you want to take there first. Then you can narrow based on size, caliber, manufacturer, etc.

Poor option -- especially the Bodyuard.

As was noted by Chadboy, a "full size" gun is what you need.

Concealing a G19 is not difficult. Don't be one of those guys who thinks CCW means you have to carry a mouse gun.

Those are all great ideas and consistent with what retailers are saying. I've looked at some of the very units you referenced and there does seem to be a preference for glock but I wasn't sure if that was purely functional or just because it carried a larger price tag. Cost isn't a real concern. I'm mostly looking for something that will offer protection and be appropriate for somebody without a great deal of firearms experience.

Particularly for someone with little or no prior experience with handguns - so that he or she does not know what is liked or disliked yet.

It's literally a no-brainer. Everyone who instructs or handles firearms will be familiar with it (pro and con - whether they like it or not) and at this point, the Glock 19 must be considered the "default" pistol in the United States - a point of departure for almost everyone.

It is in the summertime. Glock 19 is thick.

Ya I would go with one of the following.

Glock 19 ( I don't personally like the 17)
H&K vp9
Springfield xdm (the one with the 4.5 inch barrel)
Smith and Wesson M&P fullsize
Sig Sauer P320
Canik tp9
Springfield 1911
Ruger 1911
Ruger American

Like everybody else said, if you can go and shoot some at your locale gun store that would help a lot.

I guess I should have phrased that better.

It isn't difficult for me to carry a G19 -- 365 days per year.

Nor is it difficult for the guys I have trained under during the past 15 years. I can name exactly two instructors I've trained under who doesn't carry a G19 (one carries a G22 and one carries a 1911).

There is apparently an entire generation who do not want to be bothered with the "hassles" of accommodating a "normal-sized" gun. And the gun makers seem to be catering to this demographic. Which is fine with me -- if all you folks were buying G19's, they'd be more expensive for the rest of us.

Glock has a great reputation for being reliable. Easy to breakdown and clean and not having alot of "moving parts" with regards to external hammers, decocking mecahnism or manual safety (its integrated into the trigger).

You cannot go wrong with a Glock in my opinion.

I have the Glock 27, Gen 4 in .40 cal. It is subcompact and I conceal it sometimes also. No complaints.

I know a lot will not agree but with no experience I'd stay with a revolver.

Well Ive been weighing the pro's and con's of that and I think I have settled on a semi-automatic but I did consider that.

While i agree and understand that a mid size gun is much easier to shoot for a beginner...

A skinny fella like myself can not easily conceal a G19, it's just way to thick. I think something like a Shield is a much better compromise.

JMHO, and i obviously dont have the expertise you do. I just know i would have to complete alter my wardrobe, and a G19 would still be very uncomfortable.

No way on the 1911 for a beginner wanting to concealed carry, and if you are going to get a 1911, get a good one instead of a Springfield South American pos. People are continually fooled by "Springfield," which is just a marketing company that sells South American 1911's and Croatian plastics. And as for S&W, why did the military kick them out of the competition? Because their quality is suspect, that's why. See yah!

I love the hell out of some of their wheel guns but even those have bad years because of every changing ownership and greed.

The bodyguard trigger would not be a good match for someone that is not proficient or experienced shooting handguns
