I've always been a persimmon lover, but have never grown any. I finally got a tree a few years ago. It blooms and puts on a gazillion little persimmons, then almost all of them fall off. It is kind of alarming because they all fall off at the same time.

I know the tree cannot support all that fruit, so it probably drops a lot for that reason. Last year I got only about a dozen persimmons. I just want to know if this sounds normal, or are crows or squirrels picking off the small fruit?

Tree is about five or six years old, is about 10-12 feet tall, gets regular water, is inside my privacy fence, and gets fertilizer. No evidence of insect pests. Freak out, or not? Thanks.

Sounds like your tree's fruit is not getting properly fertilized. Do some reading on parthenocarpy and plant some male trees nearby.

I planted a Fuyu and a Hachiya about 8 years ago. The Hachiya drops about 50-75% of its persimmons each year without fail. I still end up with about 30-50 though so I'm pretty satisfied with the turnout. The Fuyu doesn't drop nearly as many but I'd say it's in the about 25-50% range. I've tried watering, not watering, fertilizing, and not fertilizing. Nothing seems to help. Let me know if you figure it out.

This makes me feel a lot better. Thanks for responding. There are three other persimmon trees that I know of in my immediate vicinity. My neighbor's tree across the street puts on bushels of fruit, but they are smaller. And her tree is much more established than mine. I am getting some fruit, so I think I may just need to exercise patience. It is still a young tree, and if it put on a lot of fruit, the branches would break.

These are the times I really miss my grandmother. She knew everything about everything in gardening.

Amen to that. I call my dad about everything. Even if he's wrong, I like hearing his opinion.

My grandma had four HUGE persimmon trees along the side of her house. I used to climb them as a kid and sit up there gorging myself on those wonderful fruits. Her trees were 30 feet tall and the fruits were conical and really large. Man, I miss those days.

Don't eat them when they are green
