I have a 17' aluminum boat with 90 hp on it. Runs great. Fish locally in fresh water. Boat originally had two cheap fishfinders on it. Both went bad. Would like to replace with sonar/ GPS combos. Want to be able to fish Toledo bend. Whats the best setup I could get for $1000? One really nice unit? 2 midrange units? Update with maps? Seems to be a lot of pretty good deals on eBay. But the number of units is a little overwhelming. And technology seems to change every few months.

You prefer lowrance over Garmin or ray marine? I hear lowrance can be difficult to learn/ use.

I have no experience with anything other than Lowrance.

I hear Garmin mapping is horrible.

The touch is supposed to be much better than the previous button operated HDS units.

Where do you fish 90% of the time? If it's Toledo Bend I'd recommend two Combo units so you can see your charts while fishing main lake structure. If it's shallow marsh just one combo unit at the console because you don't really need to see sonar when fishing in 2-4' of water. There are also options like mounting on a RAM pedestal where you can spin the unit when you're fishing or add a mount and a compatible trolling motor transducer to the front and move your unit back and forth. It's sounds like a hassle but you really won't move it that much because you don't need electronics on short runs or when fishing visible structure like grass or laydowns.

Lowrance HDS-7 Gen 2 Touch

Mine says HDS-Elite 7, is that the same? It tells me how deep the water is faster than digging out my knotted rope.

Eta: and I touch it to see dem different pitchurs.

Well 90% of the time I fish local water which is shallow. But I'd like to change that. The boat is new to me and would like to make trips to other water that is not so familiar. And much deeper. I like to crappie fish as well and electronics seem key for that.

Lowrance elite 7 hdi or the new chirp...hds is good for structure Scan and stuff. I fish shallow usually and saltwater so the mapping is more important. I made maps for my elite 7 unit. If 1000$ is your budget go hds7

I'd probably get one good unit like a Humminbird 899 or Lowrance HDS7. Then if later on you find you want a bow unit you'll have an idea what features you need it to have such as down imaging, side imaging andcolor or grayscale. Which brand is like Chevy or Ford it comes down to personal preference. I have both brands in different boats and can't say there's ever been a time when I've wished I had one over the other.

A trained monkey could learn to use the new lowrance units. I have an elite 5 on my boat and it took me only a couple trips to dial it in perfect and have everything set up.

Map Chip

Nah, it's new, only one official voyage with it so far. I'll learn it, and will probly read the manual one of these days.

Try youtube...I'm sure there's some videos that will help a hell of a lot better than a manual.

OG I think the only thing yours doesnt have is side scan, which isnt a big deal at all.

You can always put goggles on and stick your head in the water if you cant get that console computer figured out.

If you want two units, get two Elite 5 or 7 HDI or CHIRP units. They're relatively cheap compared to the HDS's and have pretty good maps.
