How quickly and do you care if it dies (like for a party)?

Sod if you have no grass to begin with, if you throw rye grass seed it will come up but then when it dies off you still won't have a yard.
If plant rye grass and have kids I would invest in a 55 gallon drum of "SHOUT"

Plus it will hold back the spring grass and extend his problem.

2 pallets of sod will cover MORE than 600 sq ft.
Instant yard for about $200, and it's permanent. Also it's good to put it install this time of year since you don't have to water it three times a day, not so hot and it's somewhat dormant. It'll still root during the winter, just doesn't require a lot of water since it's not growing. Then in the spring, it's already rooted so you don't have to keep it soaked waiting for the roots to get their own water from the ground.

Where would I go for sod? I know I've seen bags of seed at Walmart..but that's about the extent of my knowledge on the topic.

I mean I don't need this grass to stand the test of time, I just really want to get some grass down because there's a slight angle and I'm worried all the dirt is gonna flush out.

sod is already grown grass that is sliced up from the ground and sold stacked on pallets...you basically take it off in squares and "carpet" your yard with it...basically a pre-grown lawn...

if you just need something to prevent washing and want to go the cheapest route, buy a bag or two of ryegrass seed...just throw it out and it will grow all winter. however, ryegrass dies when it gets hot and it a kind of a bitch to keep cut when it is growing quickly in the spring...
