more than likely they'll just pull a new cable and you're looking at maybe $150 for that depending on how far away your thermostat is from the actual unit.

Had the same problem last year. Got a new AC installed this spring and had him pull a new thermostat wire.

the wire(18-5) is there just needs to be connected to control panel in the attic.

It is done, connected it to common wire connected to compressor. So far so good. Found a loose connection while I was packing wires back into unit in the attic, glad I noticed it.
It is a Honeywell RTH6500 if anyone cares... 85 bucks from Amazon. Cheapest wifi I could find that works with Alexa.

you don't want to get me started on those Honeywells. I have installed about a dozen of the touchscreen WiFi units for friends and family.
