I can't take too much of the OT and always get good home ideas from the OB. Need to run a gas line from my fireplace to behind the stove and need some recommendations.
Last time I had any dealings with this a buddy had it done for around $300 I think, but that was a couple years ago. Figured it would be around 30ft of line or so.

go get you a roll of pex and the tool/fittings, or some black pipe and tape/fittings, or some copper gas line and a torch/brazing/solder/fittings

it couldnt possibly be easier

Is PEX approved for gas lines?

ETA: Looks like it's approved for outdoors and underground use only per code.

It could be if he finds someone to do it right for $300 and not blow himself up. good luck finding someone to do it that cheaply, though.

So we talking close to $500? I mean it cost what it cost, but if prefer a little Vaseline than going in dry.
No way I'm running my own gas line. I can do some things, but that's something I'm not fricking with.

Most places, that has to be done by a licensed plumber (required by inspection dept if in an incorporated area).

I know I've wired plenty of houses when I was in college, but final connections had to be made by a licensed electrician. I'm sure that's similar with gas lines at least.

One would think so, but I was quoted $1200 on a pier and beam house where running a line would be a couple of solders and drilling through a wood floor behind the range. Needless to say, I stayed with a crappy electric range.

can't hurt to call someone out for a quote.

I was going to change over to gas for a new range. Got a couple plumbers to look at it, including a friend. It was gonna cost quite a bit because of different factors and not near as simple as patching in above the kitchen. I probably could have done it that way, but it would never fly on resale and I would have redo it then anyway.

I got a new electric range

Just did this myself, had the plumber call in the order for a flexible gas line, I ran the line through the studs and attic where the tie point was and had him come out and make the final connections. Ended up costing $1,000 total but I had him hook up a new water line for ice maker and pot filler, as well as re-route some copper lines in my bathroom. probably saved myself a few hundred bucks routing line.

Definitely need to figure $500 at minimum, plumbers I talked to charge $80-$100/hr.

Just north of Hoo Shoo Too....
House is sort of shotgun style. The gas line is in the attic next to the fireplace. I'd assume the line would be run from there to the wall (about 13-15ft) then along the wall to the spot above the range (prolly 15-20ft). Then down to the range. Think we have 12ft ceilings.

I moved in a house about 4 yrs ago. Called a plumbing company to just change out my gas cooktop and they wanted $400. I told the chick on the phone that she misunderstood me that I didn't want the line run just to change out an existing gas cook top and she said it's $400. Same company wanted to charge my buddy $200 to change out a Kitchen faucet. I have no idea how some places stay in business.

because good contractors/tradesmen are busy, thats why. i dont do residential work, but i can tell you i do not make a commercial repair/maintenance call for less than $500/minimum...and i have plenty, plenty of work

its just not worth tying up a guy or 2 for half a day otherwise

I had this issue a few years ago. Needed to run one in my attic from the hot water heater line, down a wall, to my new stove. I could not get anyone to do it. Most licensed plumbers wouldn't do it unless I had a permit, and then they wanted upwards of $500-1000. Most just laughed at me and said they weren't interested.

I finally got a one man contractor that was fixing my buddy's house post-K to come over and do it for $250. Took him a couple hours. The hardest part was climbing in my attic. The guy moved up north a few years ago or I'd get you his info.

Where are you? in the nola area, a fellow named Bill Stevenson may do it. I didn't know him when I did mine. Good, honest, very old school plumber.
