My Least Favorite Day of the Year....

Well guys, my least favorite day of the year has passed......gun cleaning day. As many of y'all know, every summer I try to go on 2 prairie dog hunts. I always bring 1-2 guns and loaded ammo for friends to use on the hunt. Of course, afterwards there's some cleaning to be done. On hunt #1, one of the two "guest guns" (221 Fireball) didn't see much action (#70 rounds) while my son's 223 Rem saw a lot more action (#170 rounds). OTOH, on hunt #2 the Fireball saw lots of action (#200 rounds) while the 223 stayed at home. In addition, I had my own guns to clean as well. I was off Friday so I decided to make it cleaning day. The Fireball has a McGowen (custom) barrel and cleaned up pretty quickly, considering how many rounds had been shot. Hunt #2 was the virgin hunt for a new prairie dog hunting gun chambered in "20 Practical" (223 Rem brass necked down to 20 caliber; it approximates the 204 Ruger). Despite having been shot #120 rounds, it came clean VERY easily; it also has a custom barrel (Shilen). The 223 Rem has a factory Savage barrel and it was VERY stubborn. I had to resort to "JB Bore Cleaning Compound" and eventually "Shooter's Choice Copper Remover", a strong copper cleaner, to get it clean. I normally use "Wipe Out", a foaming bore cleaner, but was disappointed to find out at the start of cleaning that the can was empty. I've still got my 2 XP's to clean, but their custom barrels clean up pretty easily. Now my next challenge is finding some more "Wipe Out."

That sounds awesome. I've always wanted to do that. I have a Remington 40x single shot in 6mm that will shoot lights out with a hand loaded 75 grain vmax bullet that sounds perfect for that. Also have a Ruger #1 in 22-250 with a Shilen barrel that shoots super tight as well. I hate cleaning them too but they won't shoot if you don't. Where do you hunt at?

Both those guns would be fine for pd hunting.
Years ago I hunted private land in NW TX, but the landowner died. Since then I've been going on guided hunts.
Both hunts this year were at the Kiowa National Grasslands near Clayton, NM. Last year I went on guided hunts w/ Rebel Ridge Outfitters and Les Prairie Dog Hunts Unfortunately, the plague has killed a lot of pd's, causing problems for pd hunters. For example, Rebel Ridge Outfitters cancelled all hunts this year. I've also been on guided hunts w/ Sagebrush Hunts and 10 Gauge Outfitters

Wow, must be pretty bad for an outfitter to cancel the year!
