Has anyone fished the MRGO rocks recently? It was good around this time last year. Any reports?

There used to be a couple of great spots for huge trout but it's been years since I've gone. Any luck with these lately?

When fishing it, fish it in a in coming tide. Free line live mullets on the rocks. A Bandit crank bait in pearl white or shad color cast about 12' from the rocks will produce nice trout too.

Had some good trips last Summer out there. Went Feb 29th and barely caught a thing, but we didn't expect to then as it was too early in the year. It was more of a run to get ready for this Spring/ Summer. Going in a few weeks, will probably hit the rocks and a couple of bayous or the Bay Eloi rigs.

Should be holding big trout if you know what rigs have a good shell base under and around them. April is always a good month out there for 5-6lb trout.

Which rigs have the best shell bottoms in that area?

You literally have to go out there and throw a jig head on the bottom and find out.

Good trout are showing up on the rocks. Just need some stable conditions to get out there. It will be real good real soon. Throw topwaters early and I wouldn't leave the dock without live shrimp. 3' under your favorite popping cork.

From another thread earlier today.

quote:

We're going a week from today and we're probably heading to the end of the MRGO (short rocks) to target specks using popping corks and live bait. Trout should be heading out of the marsh and into higher salinity waters preparing for the May spawn now that water is warming up. They might still be in transition and hard to find but they should be feeding wherever there is bait in the water. If rocks are not productive the backup plan is Lake of Two Trees and Lake Robin at points with current, bayou entrances and downwind shoreline. That area is loaded with oyster reefs (marked with white poles) and it's a transition zone for specks between their winter hideout and spawn location. All these areas are perfect for small boats. We see a ton of bass boats at the short rocks each June / July. Unless the wind is heading parallel to the MRGO then either the north or south rocks will be completely protected from waves and wind. There is a spoil canal south of the Hopedale launch that's the best route for getting to Two Trees, Robin and the rocks. spoil canal route Or you could always just try the MRGO rock wall close to the marina. We've had mixed results but there are always boats fishing there. Good luck!

I just confirmed that Breton Sound Marina has live shrimp. Nobody I called has croakers through.
