Didn't know if you were there for a short time, or planned to make a life there Roger. I enjoy your stories and pictures, and have always wanted to do something like that. I almost went to a mountain guide (hunting) school when I was much younger, but was too chickenshit to pack up and do it. Got a wife and kids not long after, and guess I'm stuck in the armpit forever now.

I do enjoy the redneck life though.

Well I've been here for 20 something years, this is home. I went south for a year once and realized I don't belong there anymore. I thrive here, wouldn't be happy anywhere else.

We have some friends in Sandpoint Idaho. They are good people but different. The culture there is something I don't think I can live in. Walking in the store you can just see the people are different. Plus the cold is ridiculous. It's basically the complete opposite of southern culture. One guy that lives there, that I know, lived in Montana most of his life. He has been down here several times and said Montana is more like the south than the culture and people in Idaho. He is wanting to move back. Just a bunch of good ole boys in Montana that like to have a good time, is how he described it.

The coast has a fairly mild climate. Mountains and sea, enough game to sustain you and even living near town, you're backed up to wilderness. The Southeast part is the size of Florida with only 70,000 ppl and 20 million acres of public land to use. Sitka and Juneau are the best cities, Ketchikan is also here but not much of a fan

Not true for billings. Really only Missoula and Bozeman are liberal (more so Missoula) and that's just because of the college hippies that come over from Seattle/Portland/cali

Always like to hear your stories and see your pictures. Gives me a chance to dream. Sure would like to know your background and how you made the move.

Glad to see you respond to this thread. Hoped you would when I saw the title. One of my favorites on the board.

Just bored with the normal style of life in North Louisiana and dreamed of something different. I did a lot of research and knew Southeast Alaska would be home before setting foot here, and that gut feeling was spot on. I was an estimator in La but have done many different things here to afford the local lifestyle.

Life is so much better when you find your Shangri la. I still appreciate the fact that I live here and have no desire to leave. Sure, it's isolated but that's a huge plus for me.

i would absolutely live in the upper midwest or idaho, wyoming, etc., but i can't deal with the cold winters. i grew up where it's cold half the year and have lived in the south for almost a decade now. i don't think i will ever live north of atlanta.

My son summers in Idaho, so I know those people a bit. Harsh winter in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Big snow about a week ago where he's at and 35 for the high.
A good many Mormons. Different, but good people and citizens. I like to hunt big game, fish, and camp, so the West appeals to me. Take a vacation out there and see if you like it.

Truer words have never been spoken . There are a few diamonds in the rough, but most are very homely.

I'm very interested in Wyoming but it's a pipe dream due to family. We're not even a large, close family like most south Louisiana families but enough that I don't think we could move.

Roads here suck, schools suck, humidity sucks, culcha, public land in comparison to the west sucks (though it could be much worse).

I still love a lot of LA. It's a bummer knowing how much better it could be.
