Yesterday for the first I finally fired a Mosin I acquired a few years back. Tula armory, hex receiver, pristine bore.

As I would methodically approach any weapon, I started at 25 and 50 yards...groups sucked big green donkey balls.

Volley 1 (25 yds): Poor group at 11 o'clock
Volley 2 (50 yds): Windage barely tolerable, elevation all over the place
Volley 3 (50 yds): Nothing but flyers.

In all my years in the service, I alway scored Expert or Sharpshooter on rifle. Only once did I ever get just Marksman (was sick as a dog that day). My eyes aren't as good as they once were, but I still know how to fricking fire a rifle.

I'm thinking, "damn, I wasted my money on this piece-of-shite bastard. Why do people buy these sacks of shite? frick it, I'm selling it."

I ask my 11 yr old if he wants to plink with it, and he excited accepts.

A few minutes later, the 11 yr old boy starts nailing an 8-inch plate with the Mosin 100 yrds away. How?!

With only 4 rounds left, I take over and sure enough I hit the plate twice at 100 yds. I go back to paper with the last 2 rounds at 100 yds and here's what happens...

I'm withholding my speculations. Want ya'lls thoughts.

Perhaps a burr that needed a couple of shots to clear out?

Hmmm. I like the way you think.

Well, I'm just going to put it out there...Would barrel temperature make that big of a difference? Ambient was 40 deg F.

What kind of ammo were you running? Mine both like the lighter stuff (I use 150 gr PPU).

Knowing how most Mosins shoot that was probably the problem!

185 ball.

What had me scratching my head is that it performed so poorly at first, but then greatly tightened up once the barrel got warm.

Was 40 deg outside. Surely the Ruskies wouldn't have made a rife that needed to be warmed-up first.

My only thoughts would be some cosmoline in the grooves just needed to be shot out. Have you tried the bullet test to see if there's any crown erosion? A lot of these were counter bored for a reason.

You need to replace the glow plugs.

Keep that rifle long enough and you will....

Those rifles were slapped together. Really need to take it apart, clean everything, and check the fit of the stock parts as you reassemble. Something could be off which is why it shoots better as it warms up and pieces shift around a little.

That's a possibility, but I kinda doubt it. I carefully inspected the bore to ensure I got out every bit of that nasty-arse cosmoline.

I guess the way to test out that hypothesis is to fire it again cold in 40-ish deg. weather and inspect the groups.

That ain't no shite!

This was a 1943 production, so probably the case. Though I have to admit it's not too bad. It's much tighter and smoother than another one that is a rounded received stamped 1944. However I have yet another Mosin stamped 1928 that feels like my Swedish Mauser....I haven't fired these other two Mosins. I just couldn't believe that ANYTHING with a barrel that damn long could have so poor a group under any condition.

Did that. I mean a total detail clean. That rifle was ejaculant...I mean immaculate.

Did you shoot it with the bayonet on?

As said, must have been something in the barrel.

Stop shooting left handed when CoastieJr starts thinking he's a better shot and show him who's boss.

If all of them shot like yours, its no wonder that so many Russions were killed on the Eatern Front.
