He's putting himself out there.

quote:

Seriously, this is a major problem, and it’s getting worse. It affects the outcome of tournaments and needs to be controlled. There’s culture among some guys that’s developed that says this is OK. It isn’t. We need to do something about it. Honestly, though, I don’t know what. Let me say it bluntly: These men are not true fans of our sport. We don’t need them.

then pros shouldn't be able to speak with any locals before a tourney

you know they do all the time and get tips on areas to fish

So he wants to close off public waterways so they can have a bass fishing tournament? I guess stop all of the camera crews too. If it's such a problem, why are the top contenders consistently top contenders?

They've learned how to fish around obstacles their entire careers. Learn to fish around a couple more.

I can see both sides of the argument. If you are bored enough to go watch someone fish all day, you are definitely a 'fan'.

They just need better rules and patrol boats to enforce it.

He clarifies this. He's not talking about spectators, he's talking about guys who wait until he starts fishing and then either cut him off or fish the exact same spot to try and prove they can do better than the pros on it during the tournament. Pretty dickhead thing to do.

Happens to people all of the time. The only difference is he'll get sued for snagging someone in the face with a treble hook

They do more than just that. They will pay. You should see the shenanigans that go on with the pro redfish guys.

I'm guessing you didn't read the article? He has no problems with spectators or people taking notes, following him around and then fishing it after the tournament. His problem is with guys cutting off the pros fishing a bank intentionally or guys following pros and fishing their spots as soon as they pull out. Is it legally wrong? No. Is it being a dick and hurting the sport? Yes.

how do we know this loud mouth isn't fishing their spots...they go to a lake 4-5 days a year and think they are discovering unknown spots or something

’m talking about the jerks who follow us around during practice and in competition to see where we’re fishing and then move onto our spots and fish them. Sometimes they wait until we leave but at other times they move in right on top of us in the middle of a tournament day. Either way it’s discourteous and disrespectful. I don’t know what else to call them besides jerks. (Well, actually I do know what they are but B.A.S.S. wouldn’t publish it if I wrote it so I might as well go with jerks.)

The other one was at the TTBC. This guy who probably fancies himself a bass angler cut in front of me as I was fishing a bank and then fished everything in front of me with a vengeance. He was really fishing hard. This was in the middle of the tournament. Really, how many other hot bass lakes are around Lake Ray Roberts? Was my spot the only one he could fish?

I’m told that the game with these guys is to see if they can catch more weight from a spot than we catch. If so, that’s really stupid. It proves nothing because to be a real bass angler you have to find your own fish, and then catch them.

All these guys are doing is fishing someone else’s spot. Their efforts prove they are sorry men who can only catch bass that another angler found. They’re proving their own weakness. If they think they can fish, maybe they should compete in the Opens, qualify for the Elites and give it a go under real professional tournament conditions.

He doesn't have a problem with them fishing spots, but following someone around and fishing where they were as soon as they leave during a tournament or cutting them off when they are fishing down a bank is a dick move. I wouldn't do that to any fellow angler.

Yeah, I agree.

My brother and I were fishing on Championship Sunday in Toledo Bend. We went try to find spots we thought the pros wouldn't be. We were fishing this one area around Big Bass when Chris Lane pulled up with about 30 boats following. Heck, he cut US off. We reeled up and went around him to get out of his way. We didn't have $100K on the line.

I'm sure it happens all the time but it's still pretty chicken shite. He not talking about dealing with other people fishing in general, just the jackass following him from spot to spot trying to prove he would be money leader on the tour if he just hadn't spun that prop back in 86'.

Want some fun and listen to really good internet radio show Check out Ike's show

LINK

FWIW, yes Mike is energetic and animated and a character, he's extremely hard on himself and it has backfired on him.........He's also one of the most approachable and likeable guys on the Elite Tour. Kids love him and he goes out of his way to spend time with them and I've never seen him turn down a request for an autograph especially from kids. No matter his day or how tired he might be. Most of the guys on the tour are like this, Ike is somewhat on a different level when it comes to introducing kids to the sport. I'm glad to be able to call him a friend

Tough shite. That's fishing. If the pros weren't such assholes all the time they would probably get better treatment. Obviously I'm assuming the bass fishing crowd hates the tournament guys as much as us inshore fisherman.

Nothing is worse than when the IFA or redfish series is in town. Those tower boats go around burning flats and bumping fish and making life in the marsh a general pain in the arse. I would imagine BASS is much of the same.

Why would anyone care about this?
