smallest possible. My circle hooks were too big last week, so I put on the next smallest hook I had in the boat, a treble hook. Broke about 7 of them off. I also broke off a bunch on 25 lb leader.

I'd start with 45 lb flouro and change it up in lower increments to get the best response. Same with hooks and try different colors. sometimes they like the red hooks.

I had success a couple weeks ago using 50lb fluro and some black h20 J hooks.

I had originally tied on 25lb fluro and had multiple break offs

Breaking the law there young one.

Any time fishing a rig, you suppose to use just circle hooks.

Smallest circle hook you can find so the bait can hide the hook. Leader, it depends on your main line and rig. What you using there?

We use 50lb Fluorocarbon and the cheap Vmc 4/0 or 5/0 hooks from academy.
They are small and thin.

Buy lots if cheap small hooks...between the rig and sharks, you'll burn through them.

Never thought about that, but I was told by the DA that the guys that win the mangrove Calcutta annually deploy croakers attached to trebles. It's an effective method obviously

Very effective. One of the best baits for them. You can still use circle hooks by hooking the croaker thru the back. That will make them dive down deeper.

Just wondering, what's the best method of catching Mangroves? We have been hitting rigs in about 40' of water and catching nothing but Red Snapper. We rig hook on the down current side and drop shrimp and cut bait as close to the rig as we can get it.

Usually nothing hits it in the middle of the water column, everything on the bottom. Catch a literal shite ton of Sheephead and bull reds mixed in with a few Red Snapper and Gag Grouper. Not a single Mangrove.

Move rigs, areas, and position on rigs. Be judicious with chum as chum will often bring red snappers up and red snappers will eat more voraciously than mangroves.

Try deeper water. Two weeks ago, we had nothing in 40', but when we hit 60', they were stacked.

We bounced around on the rigs and in the area, same thing everywhere. We've never gone out to 60' though, after the first stop, we usually have a Red Snapper on the boat and don't want to go past the 10mi line.

I was just curious, wondering if people would usually catch them on the up current side of the rig as opposed to the down current side. I was under the impression that you could catch Mangroves in shallower water than Red Snapper.

Either. Here's a secret: Fish under the kitchen of the house on the rig.
