I have never seen one before and it almost looks fake in the picture. Would you shoot one if you had the opportunity?

Hell yes and it'd be on the wall.

Shoot it, like with a pellet gun at the zoo?

Looks like a wood duck on acid.

I had an old friend of mine who's grandfather had a taxidermy shop right down the road. He had an incubator and raised the mandarins. Very cool looking birds. He mounted most of the ones he raised when they were grown.

the north american wood duck and the mandarin duck are related, in fact the only two members of their genus

sure I would shoot it...I think I remember reading that they occasionally show up in the wild in North America.
I have only seen them around farms and places like that who raise ducks. They are actually very similar to a wood duck drake.

We passed on a single in our blind this year but only because we had a pair of gadwalls working.

I know someone who shot one in the swamp along lake pontchatrain. Where it came from I don't know

Why wouldn't you shoot it? In areas of Asia it's a regular duck. It's not endangered I'd shoot it in a heartbeat.
