I had the chance to fish them a few years ago. Hands down the craziest thing I have ever tried to do. Destroyed a couple thousand dollars worth of gear before finally grabbing a leader on the last day.

It's a lot like swordfish.

Ate mako here in Houston last year....very meaty, somewhere between Mahi and chicken.

That video was really sketchy. Did they land that shark? And why was the rod bent in the complete opposite direction of the shark? I tried to work out the physics of the shark taking line slack but it just doesn't make sense.

Sorry for the negativity. Just seemed weird to me.

Like Barf said, a lot like swordfish. Defined grain white meat. Not tough, but firm. I grill like tuna. Basically just sear it. Mako (shortfin) have a bladder and don't piss through their skin, like most sharks do. It's also very similar to black marlin (I don't kill but a few die while catching).

I didn't watch the video, but the reason for the rod bending and the fish is in another direction is usually related to the bow in the line and the hydrodynamic effects on so much line being in the water.

That's what I was figuring but I just couldn't make sense of the angle difference. Shows how much I know haha. Wasn't trying to hate on the video.

It's pretty crazy and can get confusing when a fish isn't on the surface. That's why I mentioned in an older thread, that speckled trout tags are too large. Hydrodynamic drag is a bitch.

We hooked a mako with frekey one afternoon, that I only wish we could get back. That is truly "The one that got away." I see that fish in my dreams.

Ed is a friend of mine. He's an excellent fisherman.

Of the boats and guys I have fished with, He is certainly top 3. Next time you see him ask him about the best wahoo trip he has been on. I was part of that crew.

I will. He's a coastie, so he's got that going for him, too. I remember when he first started. Full of energy and would go out of his way to work hard to catch fish, and still does.

What's the wahoo count?

I don't remember the total, but all four rods were bent numerous times. Then the mako showed up and gears changed for a while

Don't know. I wasn't on that boat. It was just the only Mako video I could think of off the top of my head. There is a full 14min unedited video somewhere of the eat and the fight.

I do not know if they leadered the fish or not.

If you are interested in sharks on the fly, we have spinners here in Louisiana. The are fast and like to jump.

Here is a cool video of Andy Mill pulling hard on some sharks. LINK
