Maiden fishing trip tomorrow

Looking at taking my son out of bayou Lacombe tomorrow morning.
I have not fished in 20 years, any pointers for this area?
plan on picking up some live shrimp. Best to fish the lake of the bottom or under a cork?
I have been told to try the mouth of the bayou and to make the trip to the railroad bridge in slidell.
