Had Jr in the stand with me today and we never saw a deer. He's not very fired up about deer hunting anyway, even though he has killed a deer and can hit what he's aiming at. Stayed glued to his phone or either slept 95% of the time. I told him he should've gone earlier in the season when deer were much more active, but just like any millennial, instant success is expected and patience is not considered.

Going to a stand closer to home tomorrow where I feel I can see a deer and will punish one if it shows. Rut's over here and deer are mostly nocturnal. Hopefully the heavy rain holds off for a while and deer will move a little. Jr will sleep in after he plays Xbox several hours and instagrams his girlfriends or whatever they do tonight.

frick a cell phone, Xbox, and Lord have mercy on a deer tomorrow. They better hold off til game time.

Just venting. Have to come to the realization that today's youth have way too many distractions to want to learn the outdoors.

I would still take him hunting.

He doesn't need to regret not spending time with his father in the outdoors

I take him whenever he shows interest, just tired of begging him and then having to hunt for him while he's distracted.

At 14 I was hunting alone. He's never been on a stand by himself. Guess I just need to accept the fact that not all like to hunt and give up.

What about some other type of hunting? I'm not a big deer hunter because it's so damn boring. Duck hunting is the ticket for people that need some action/interaction.

Yes we go fishing a few times a year. Patience is non existent for him, so if we have a slow trip he doesn't go when things get good. Tried to explain that he has to put in time to have success.

Sounds like you have a parenting problem. Who pays for all that bullshite your bitching about? Who raised the kid to be how he is?

I didn't have a cell phone and I never was a big gamer when I was younger, but I did sleep in, sleep on the stand, and want to leave early to go back to eat breakfast. You didn't say how old he is, but I personally wasn't ate up with it for a while, more interested in riding 4-wheelers, eating, shooting and everything else that goes along with camp life. I hunted hard between 12-14, then was playing sports and more interested in women and partying in high school, than I was getting up at 4:00 every weekend. Once I graduated I hunted hard for a while before getting married, a real job, and starting a family.

It's a cycle for most people, not just kids.

I didn't have a cell phone either till I was a senior in high school I don't think. We always dog hunted when I was a kid so most hunts had some sort of action. If there weren't any deer, at least there was a big dog catching commotion and an air boat ride and somebody's truck stuck and all that kind of good stuff. It was fun enough for me to always want to go.

If I got a C on a test I couldn't go to the camp that weekend and the teachers always knew it. Major motivation to make those grades

Keep with it but change it up a little. it's nothing in you, some just don't care for deer hunting. Mine can't sit in a stand more than an hour. But he will go with me to walk and scout really enjoys squirrel and turkey hunting because you don't sit still too very long Took him duck hunting last week and he stayed til 1000 and had a great time.

I don't blame some of these kids though. I can not sit in the same box stand overlooking the same scenery very long.

Electronics can stay at the house.

Take him duck hunting, rabbit hunting, set out beaver traps, squirrel hunt

Teach him how to build a fire, cut firewood.

THIS
My dad was Not a big hunter, but he brought me a few times. I married into a big hunting family and my dad doesn't want to come with me now. I wish I could go back as a kid and sit in a blind with him. Just be happy he comes.
OP one day to or from the stand, tell him, "Son, I know there are probably a lot of things you would rather do than come hunting with your old man, but it does mean a lot to me that you still do. I enjoy spending time with you."

I feel your pain. Mr. CT1 and I were both athletes in high school and college. So when we had a daughter we thought we'd have a natural athlete. Nope. She had no interest in anything athletic. Of course, we were disappointed. However, she has so many great qualities as a human being. I am so proud of her and I feel she is so much better than me in so many ways. Each person has his own talent and interests that don't necessarily mirror our own. C'est la vie.

I'm a jackass about the use of em. My 7 yo will sit all day, we've never brought an electronic for him. He is glued to a pair of binos right now. We haven't seen a deer in 3 hunts now.

I just take them away at home and turn everyone's TV off. After 30 minutes of bitchin they just
disappear and go outside usually

My hypocrisy is duly noted as I type this out!!

Screw that. I can't even go to the bathroom without playing on my phone. I try to still hunt till 10:30 or so, no way I could do that if I didn't have something to break up the 4-5 hours.

ETA: Censored for the lady in the audience.
