If successful, the new rifle and round combination would give troops a weapon they can carry with about the same number of rounds as the current 5.56 mm but with greater range and accuracy in their firepower — with little change in weight.

Intermediate calibers being tested include the .260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, .264 USA as well as other noncommercial intermediate calibers, including cased telescoped ammo, Army officials said.

Um... no way that is for standard issue rifles. Looks more like a 7.62 Nato replacement.

The H&K field testing is still a sore subject

Agreed. they MAY one day change rifles, but caliber will stay the same for the main battle rifle.

The Army tried replacing before with no luck. The problem or problems is there would have to be a caliber change that Nato would accept which given our beloved allies disposition of not even meeting their 2% GDP goal of military spending renders any change a stillborn effort.
I can see the M16 being evolved like different barrel config, maybe small changes like charging handled or magazine but it'll still be basically the same rifle. If the SCAR, HK 416 and ACR couldn't do it, I just see the M16 FOW carrying in for at least another generation.

There are some units using a 260 remington, but they are units that can procure their own weapons and the numbers are very small.

WTF is 6.5 USA? Going to have to look into that one.

SOCOM is testing this stuff for fielding, nothing is replacing the M4 or M16 variants any time soon.

Isn't the 7.62 Mk17 the rifle of choice anyway these days in Afghan?

I highly doubt the M4/M16 is ever replaced as long as we are shooting shooting cased ammo.

It's very popular with Rangers and Spec Ops.

It's a shame the 6.5x55 is just a hair too long to fit in .308 sized actions because I'd LOVE for that shite to get popular again.

Its coming back again due to match shooters picking up the 6.5 calibers. Several companies now have 260 match loads available. When I had my 260 there was two factory loads available. Should have kept that gun, but oh well ill build another one day.
