Louisiana trout V.S. Texas trout

Today I fished in Galveston, Texas with my uncle and his friend who is a guide. We caught 25 keeper trout (the size minimum here is 15 in) and another 25-30 12-14 inch trout. My question is this, what is stopping Louisiana from following suit with other states on the gulf coast and upping the standards for our fish a little bit? We have such an amazing fishery in Louisiana that makes all other states look like an amateur hour, yet we settle for the smaller average sized trout. Y'all lemme know what you think

Not "all settle" for smaller specks.

So, you kept 8 fish each and you're asking why people in Louisiana keep more than that...well because they have more fish right? You answered your own question.

Gotta eat at the camp

I like the smaller school trout, better eating to me personally.
Anything above 18 I don't keep cause the meat gets oily.

You want to short version, or the long version?
We have liberal limits because we can. We don't raise the minimum size because we don't have to. Short version.
It's probably something we should consider but as long as the fishery is healthy at a 12 inch minimum and a 25 fish limit, the catch and release into grease crowed will continue to fill boxes with any legal fish.
I'd rather see redfish given gamefish protection.

FYI I fish Leeville and Hopedale. I was just over here on vacation, last minute trip popped up so we went.

So this guy is a guide and you caught 55 specks between 3 people?
We(two) catch that many throw backs here as a rule at times. Not hatin', just sayin'.

Besides the tremendous ecological differences between the east Louisiana trout and Texas trout, you have to consider what the fishery is being managed for. People in LA by and large would rather be able to keep 25 12" trout than keep fewer bigger trout. As long as the fishery is healthy, maintain the liberal limits. If you want to catch fewer, bigger trout in LA then fish the areas where this is the case (big lake, breton sound, lake p, etc...). The central LA marshes don't produce the size trout that the saltier bays of TX do.

Winner winner, chicken dinner

Because I like to eat those 12" specks.

is it necessary to keep 25 twelve inch trout, seems like an awful lot of fish...

Not after you put a knife on them.
I think everyone here would be for more regulation on specks if it was needed. However, all research has indicated that the fishery is so prolific, recreational fishing can't put a dent in it.

Sounds like someone who can't catch 25 trout.
Sucks for you. Sorry.

Our liberal limits also attract some out of state tourists from Texas who want to get more for their money if they are going to pay for a guide. Big Lake guides might have you assassinated if you even suggest lowering the limit again. Hell, I might too

The hugely different mindset of the anglers in each State aside the bottom line is these are totally different fisheries and there's no sense comparing them. TX is full of high salinity estuaries that are generally poor at producing numbers but very good at producing size. My guess is that estuaries with high shrimp numbers will produce more but smaller trout. Estuaries with fewer shrimp but more fish seem to have bigger but fewer trout so I don't think changing the size limits will yield vastly different results. I could be just talking out my arse though.
Besides, if you're in it for the meat, 12-14" trout taste the best and it's not even close..

how you arrive at that conclusion is anyone's guess, stay on topic and focus, catching is never a problem, my question is about keeping 25 specks...

Truth is many people don't ever limit out on trout.
The population is biologically sustainable given current regulations and the size of the trout in various parts of the state is more due to fishing habitat than fishing pressure
