Maybe it's because we don't have a pig problem around us but I would have never guessed this
Hunters once again harvest more hogs than deer in Louisiana.
quote:
Over the course of the 2013-2014 season, Louisiana hunters harvested significantly more feral pigs than deer, something that came as no surprise to state biologists. This is because the invasive hog population, referred to by some experts as one of the most worrying environmental issues for the state, directly impacts the deer population.
quote:
Last year hunters harvested 166,200 deer, a healthy sum after a decade of declining deer numbers. However, hogs still beat out deer as the state’s most harvested big game animal with more than 183,600 bagged. Officials say the number of hogs shot last year rose 14 percent over 2012's total.
quote:
The number of hogs killed annually may seem big on paper, but experts say it can be difficult to control Louisiana’s pig population. There are an estimated 500,000 feral hogs in the state and sows can produce an average of 12 piglets every year. At that rate, the LDWF believes that 75 percent of the total swine population must be harvested every year to maintain a stable number of pigs. Even with loosened hunting regulations, that is a tall order for Louisiana hunters. Wildlife officials are currently working to make it possible for state hunters to harvest pigs from a helicopter, a highly effective method that has seen use in nearby Texas.

Would it help if Louisiana put a year round bounty on the hogs? From reading yall's posts about the hogs for the last couple of years, there is no doubt in my mind that any wild hog, domestic or not, that I see roaming free around here is gonna be killed on sight.

I would imagine that number is a great deal higher. All deer are supposed to be reported, but I can't say I have ever heard of anyone reporting a hog to green jeans.

You can add 7 hogs to that number that we didn't report.

I can believe it because almost everyone I know says they will shoot a hog anytime no matter what if they see one.

From an article a while back:
quote:
Beginning with the 2008-09 season, the state implemented a tagging system that requires hunters to tag and report their deer after harvest, but hunter compliance has been abysmal.
You'd think LWF would try harder to check for tagged deer but I have never heard of one instance of this happening
Louisiana really needs to start following the MS deer management model. What we have is shite

Reported pig #s is laughable. I dont know how many my buds have killed in the kast year, but its alot.... And asking them if they were reported would like be asking them if they told their wife how many beers they drank opening weekend at the camp. Lol

I assume the hog harvest was estimated in a similar manner as they do with the deer harvest LINK

True.
Will say, this past year my old mans deer lease killed more deer than hogs. 1st time in 3-4 years

Between my dad and I we killed 4 deer last year. We have killed 7 hogs in the last two months.

What determines whether a baby pig comes out looking wild with the natural stripes vs. the spotted yard pig look? Like this pic, I've seen both from what appears to be the same litter.

They're everywhere at my uncle's place in Gardner.

If by bag you mean shoot in the guts and let run off and die then yes...I bagged more hogs last year than deer

I'll report these 3 from yesterday.

I have been hearing rumblings of marshmallows being used to kill hogs. Not sure how true that is though, but it sounds legit

Based on article I believe I need to retract all future offers for hog hunts here in TX.
