Louisiana buying a boat in Alabama
Posted by Dennis McGee on 9/28/17 at 8:04 pm00
I'm from Louisiana. I'm going to buy a boat (17' fiberglass w/ 90hp) from a dealership in Alabama this weekend. What do I need to know? Anyone previously had a similar situation? I understand that there is a 2% state sales tax...no tile required on boat, i think. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why would a Louisiana man spend a nickel in Alabama??

Ask the thousands of Louisianans that travel to gulf shores and orange beach every spring and summer.

Not sure if this will help:
I’m from Louisiana, just bought a boat in Arkansas last month. From my experience, I paid sales tax on the boat at the dealer in Arkansas, so I didn’t have to pay sales tax on the boat when I got it registered in Louisiana. I got a title for the boat, motor, and trailer, but I was told the titles for the boat and motor are pretty much useless because it’s the trailer that is actually getting registered. The DMV kept the trailer title to send off with the registration papers. The bank kept the titles for the boat and motor just in my file for the loan. I had never done anything like that before, so it was a learning experience for me. And I still probably don’t have it all figured out.

i bought a boat from Oklahoma. They do not register their trailers which became a pain in the arse, but IIRC, I had to pay LA parish and state taxes on the boat and that shite aint cheap. I got the boat and motor title transferred, but had to get proof of purchase of the trailer from the dealership when they purchased it. Then had to bring the trailer to troop c to get inspected before being able to get it registered at the DMV.

Not real sure how it works in LA but I bought a boat early this year in AR. I did not pay any sales tax there. I paid it when I registered here in AL.

Include Perdido Key in there as well

just make sure you have all the paperwork to title the boat motor and trailer. Alabama doesn't require trailer tags and that was my big issue when I bought my Bass Cat from a guy in Alabama. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get trailer tags. Just don't leave without all the paperwork you need. DMV should have a checklist of the paperwork you need... I would print it off and take it with me... or email it to them today so they can have it ready.

If you are paying cash shouldn’t be a hassle. If you’re financing buying in Bama but live in LA can be a PITA. I would get all of the paperwork done before you make the drive.

Call LDWF and ask them. For sure you'll pay tax on the trailer when you register it.
