I have never hunted a day in my life. Is there anywhere in St. Tammany that would be a good place to start? I would like to be able to pass along to my sons experiences I hear others talking about!

Do you have friends that hunt?

I would probably try to get in on a lease with a club, that way it's set up and you can kind of learn from other people and not have to figure it out on your own.

Your kids don't want those kinds of memories. You need to focus on your career and the election that is coming up in 4 years

Would start by figuring out what you want to hunt. You will need to take hunters safety

Small game hunting like squirrels is a good way to start because you learn how to slip through the woods and learn your feed sources

Duck hunting can be a blast and you don't have to be real quiet.

I would find someone to take you with them and then go from there

It's not hard to get into it today. You need to start pokeing around and find a lease. Once you get in you'll be given a designated area to hunt. Go to Academy and in a hour tops you'll have everything you need to get set up.

There's plenty of leases/clubs in St. Tammany. But if you're just getting into it and want to learn I suggest going to Honey Island Swamp (Pearl River Wildlife Management Area). It's public and you can learn your basics hunting squirrel, rabbit, hogs and deer.

But as far as getting set up and what you need, well that all depends on what you want to hunt.

The above suggestions of going with friends a few times are excellent advice. You WANT to learn so you can pass it down but what if you don't enjoy it? Will your kids learn fully from someone who doesn't really enjoy it?

First thing's first... Hunter's Education classes for all of you!

Great advice from everyone. I can't preach it enough though, before learning to hunt, teach your kids safety. Safety is always first, the majority of accidents that occur while hunting are by inexperienced hunters.

Unloaded guns kill more people than loaded guns.

Meaning guns that are believed to be unloaded cause a lot of accidents.

If you have a child or children that are old enough take the state hunter education course with them. I did it and they still remember it.

Start with squirrels, rabbits, then birds. Surely you have some friends who hunt. Go with them.

I started hunting at 25.

A lot of WMAs in South LA are not for the faint of heart. I'd say leave all of the swamps alone.

He should go with a buddy a couple of times, then bring his kid. After that, try and get in a club around town. I used to hunt at Money Hill. There were some nice deer there, but the club dynamics and management were so fricked, we got out. That was 10+ years ago. I've heard they have cleaned it up since
