Looking to buy my first rifle

Just started getting into deer and duck hunting about 2 years ago and have realized it's time to get my own gun. I go duck hunting about once or twice a year and deer hunting 3 or 4 times a year. That being said, I think I'm going to get a rifle before I get a shotgun. Most of the time the only range I need is about 100-200 yards but every now and then I'll get put in a stand where I need to make a longer shot (500 yards) but that is very rare. Anyone know of a decent gun(assuming I would need a .308) with scope in the ~$750 range? TIA
Any recommendations for the Remington 700?

OB loves the Tikka T3, but if you're serious about taking shots out over 200 yards then plan on upping your optics budget and putting in some quality time on a shooting bench with your new rifle, no matter what brand it is. There are plenty of great bolt guns and calibers out there for deer, where the rubber usually meets the road is in the glass.

You may need to up your budget because for longer shots you need some quality glass. I love Leupold because it's a quality scope but not too expensive plus it's what I use in the army.

Thanks. The Tikka T3 is at the top of my range without a scope. Not sure I need something quite that nice.

I'd say 95% of the time my shots are in the 100 yard range. Any recommendation for a good scope for this?

In that budget range I would go with a ruger American rifle and the best scope you can afford
As for calibers, nothing wrong with .308, 30-06, .270 or even 7mm-08, as well as countless others, but being your first rifle I would keep it simple

quote:If, new Ruger American, with Vortex, or Nikon glass. Caliber is a whole different discussion, that doesn't really matter for whitetail deer hunting, but a .308 will be fine.

500 yards

I went out to Practice at 300 yards the other day, I couldn't hit shite , it was embarrassing,
I couldnt even see where the shots were going with 10x binoculars.
300 is a long way, 500 a very, very long way. I've shot at 600 and without a spotting scope it was hard to tell if I was on the right target.
My first rifle was a 7-08 savage American classic with sightron II 3x9,
Then I bought a browning .280 xbolt with Leopold 3.5x10 for longer range and a little better ballistics
I'm realizing I just shoot the savage better, I like the trigger a lot better. I may sell the xbolt and get another savage in .338 Federal

After doing some research you're absolutely correct. I have no need for this long of a shot. Really a max of 125-150 yards.

Savage, Ruger American are great rifles in your range - my favorite shooter this year was a TC Venture that I dusted off, forgot how light and accurate this rife was. Scope, vortex diamondback series are a great bang for the price. Good luck

I have a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight .270, Nikon glass, 99% condition, would let it go, I have another rifle so I never use it.

Ruger has been a darn good rifle for me in several calibers for 30 years. Have never had not one issue with any of the Ruger calibers

Agreed. 99% of hunters don't really need to think about anything over 250-300 yards. I shot a 550 us target at range with the tikka. Target was 12x18. I hit it 6 out of 10 times in a lead sled. I would have 0 confidence I could hit a deers vitals.
To the op, the river American with maybe a Leopold vx2 would be a good choice.
Personally, I would go with a tikka for about 550 And get a decent scope for about 200. Upgrade scope later if you feel the need.
I know that's frowned upon on the OB. But I'm sure a $200 scope today is just as good as a $800 scope of 20 years ago. IMHO

For glass, Cabelas has the Vortex Diamondback on sale for $149 right now. Great deal on a quality scope. Any new savage or ruger rifle will be more than sufficient. I kind of like the savage axis II hardwood editions. It's not fancy, but it's different than the typical black stocks on most entry level rifles. Good luck, congrats on the new gun baw!

Ruger American for 400 bucks plus a 300 dollar scope.

I got a new tikka and I love it, but you are right you don't need that for a first rifle. Half the guys on this board got 1500 in rifle/optics and haven't killed 10 deer in their lives.
Buy you a Rem700(308 or 270) or a Ruger American and a Vortex Diamondback. There is absolutely no reason you can't be successfully out pass 300 if you practice.

My largest buck was take at 324 yards with a Walmart special Remington 700 .270. Whatever cheap bushnell 3-9x40 scope they put on them back in '03. I was 15 when I shot it. Maybe it was luck or maybe I put the crosshairs right over his back.
It is possible.
