Looking to buy a boat from a friend. Need some advice on a fair asking price. Since this is my first boat purchase, I'm not sure what's fair and what's not.

16' aluminum jon boat
- not sure of year
- leaky rivets; will have to either be replaced or JB welded

old Yamaha 25 hp motor
- runs well but dies in neutral if you don't give it gas

brand new trailer

Only picture I have. Sorry.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't listen to those guys. The boat, motor and trailer are worth more than $700. I'd think more like $1500-2000

I wouldn't buy a boat with "leaky rivets", but hey it's your money.

I was just asking you to clarify what you wrote. I didn't understand "I would out."

ETA: Saw your edit. I understand the hesitation. It's not that hard to fix leaky rivets, right?

My dad has a boat that I can use whenever so this would be more of a project boat to chase reds in / rig up for bowfishing.

You can drill them out and replace with machine screws and 5200

or you can try to "re-buck" them (google that).

You can also drill them out and replace with new rivets (closed end blind rivets - easiest. or original aircraft rivets)

Rivets aren't that hard to fix temporarily, but for the long term they should be replaced or welded up. The engine problem could be anything from carb to power pack related. Again not expensive if you can do it yourself, but if a mechanic does it you could be looking at a more expensive fix.

Eta: I personally would never buy or sale anything like a boat, truck, ect to or from a friend. Have seen it end the friendship too many times.

1. 25 will be slow. 40 or bust
2. Leaky rivets would scare the crap out of me so ignore 1. and skip this buy

Rivets... I remember WWII.

Go find an all welded boat and thank me later.

Exactly. So, being it's a friend, bring everything wrong that OB is telling you to his attention, buy boat from him for $700, then turn around and put it for sale for $1500-2000 after you fix leaky rivets and spit shine it. Profit, upgrade.

I don't buy or sell things to friends/family and recommend that you don't either. Especially if it is something that has potential to be a money trap.

It's not like it's some rare find of a boat. They have similar or better boats for sale on LA sportsman all the time.

That's a badass motor. Riveted aluminum hulls are cheap. If you're in Louisiana make sure the trailer has a title.

I got a boat with the same problem a while back, and fixing the leaks is a big PITA. Plus, you have to go back and paint. I wouldn't do it again

Leaky rivets are just part of owning a riveted boat. There's no reason to be scared of them or the boat. The engine would concern me more. It's not running well and it's undersized.

I would wait and buy a welded boat with appropriate hp. Leaky rivets aren't w big deal, they just tend to stay leaky. You'll get tired of your shite getting wet.

In tip top shape, it's probably worth about 2k. In the condition you described, I would only go about $800.
