Looking for a saltwater combo

Need a new rod and reel for red fish, trout, flounder, etc. that won't break the bank. What does the OB suggest?

Doesn't really matter. Probably going to buy both eventually starting with a baitcaster first.

Buy anything from Walmart and put some braided line on it.

Calcutta 250, allstar or better road will run you 300. what do you want to spend and why do you want a bait casting reel for saltwater? A Shimano Sodona and good rod you can grab for 100 150 and will be fine

I like baitcasters over spinning

re: Looking for a saltwater combo
I used baitcasters growing up back when they had no brakes. However, and I still do for Bass fishing and inshore fishing and have half dozen calcuttas etc. But for going offshore or in the bays where is is almost always windy, and accuracy is typically not as importance as distance a spinning reel is superior. i have 600 dollar custom calcutta set ups with superline but you cant out cast a Sedona with a 7 foot rod on Biloxi Bay with it if you are Bill Dance.

Are you guys fishing narrow canals a lot?

re: Looking for a saltwater combo
Not trying to be smart arse but I notice a lot of Louisiana guys use baitcasting reels for saltwater and you don't see that much East of Louisiana. I even see you guys bring that gear for surf casting out to Chandeleur. I was just curious are the waters you are fishing different or is it just a cultural thing?
