Maybe y'all of TD can help me out here. I've been getting back into hiking (did a lot of it back in the day in scouts).

I'm supremely confident that with a map and a compass I'd be just fine, and I'm not worried about getting lost in the wilderness and ending up on that show "I shouldn't be alive." But hell, they make the units fairly cheap these days so I figure why not.

But here's the thing; I'm always going to have my phone with me (iPhone 7) and the maps feature only works while it is within rage of the cell network - the phone's GPS isn't a real GPS. So I was wondering if there is a GPS unit that would pair with the phone, and essentially allow me to continue using my phone as the GPS and I could keep the actual GPS in my pack? Anyone know of such a device? Or if they are any good?

Also, is the Backpacker still the place in Baton Rouge for hiking/backpacking gear?

No personal experience, but I know a few people who have tried these and like them.

Osprey makes great stuff but most people only need a 50.

I own the Osprey Aether 60 and Black Diamond Mission 50.

I have an Inreach. Can send texts and also emergency SOS. Pairs with iPhone.

The mrs wanted me to be able to text just once a day so she knows I'm not dead yet when out of cell range for days.

I don't really know how to use the map features very good yet. But the texting is nice. Send her a message every night and GPs cords of where I'm camping.

No, but I've heard good things. It has great reviews too. Very light from what I saw when I Googled it.

Probably my next pack. The negatives I've read are the straps are maybe a little too narrow.

It's definitely geared to minimalist. That pack is half the weight of my Aether but it's built to carry serious weight.

I hardly ever do that anymore and wish I would've bought something else.

I use my Mission pack almost exclusively now.

These are the shite. I've got an older model, but it's great.
