We want to get my son a bloodhound puppy for Christmas. They seem to be scarce in my neck of the woods. I live in SW Miss and go to BR about 3 times a week. Any ideas other than Craigslist ? There aren't any on there or la sportsman that I have found.

www.puppyfind.com

I find some of the more reputable breeders on that site.

I also suggest be willing to travel to get the dog. If the best dog is in Texas, go and get it. I drove 7 hours to Gainesville for my dog. Not one regret.

See how long the wait list is at Angola. They breed a great bloodhound.

Don't let the haters discourage you about a BH. I had one for 10 years. They are unique to say the least, but I really enjoyed mine.

I have one that I got from a guy in Jacksonville AR. Absolutely love him. He is a natural blood trailer. I say natural because he had very little formal training and he has found several deer. A couple that I was amazed by. Jumped one deer 3 different times and stayed on her til she finally ran out of gas.
There is a kennel in Mississippi that breeds some great ones if you don't mind shelling out some cash.

I should also point out that mine has a decent pedigree but nothing special... his mom was just a family dog but dad was a police dog that had several credentials. No blood trailing in his background but it came natural to him.

Being that he is a BLOODhound, I am sure there was some blood trail training in his background

right.... just not a lot of blood lines from blood tracking dogs that I can find in his dna. But it's OBVIOUSLY in his dna somewhere, hence the name bloodhound.

I've always contemplated getting a blood hound but have heard some people say that sometimes they will just take off on a scent and never come back.

Example, you're hanging out at the camp and the dog is just doing dog things then smells something he likes and just goes and unless you get lucky finding him he's gone.

Any truth to that?

Thanks for all the info. I don't mind driving some within reason. My son is 5 and wants a bloodhound. He reminds me of Arliss on Old Yeller and needs him a good dog. That's all we hear and to be honest I want one too. We hunt on the land around our house and he would definitely get his share of blood trailing. I don't need a super pedigree but would like a full blood pup.
