Caught another one this afternoon - the good kind - Speckled Kingsnake. Pic near bottom of thread.

And proudly brought it to our room to show Mrs Dong who was none too pleased. Best part, he was sporting underwear only and found the snake while down at the pond checking his crawfish traps - in his just his underwear.

God I hope he knows what he's doing. One mistake in identification and a someone that young could quickly lose a limb or worse.

That being said, I'm sure you're a proud papa!

He's well versed. Has the LDWF snake ID app on his phone and I was with him.

Understand your concern/observation, though.

Looks like a rat snake. Congrats on having a son who is a real man and not a pussy like most of the OB. I knew proper snake identification when I was around 8-10 years old. It's not that difficult with just a little study. Venomous snakes are EASILY identifiable. The ONLY situation that may cause any confusion is catching watersnakes, which can be hard to identify when dry since you often can't see colors or pattern. But if you can't identify the very distinct head, if you're close enough to catch them you're close enough to see the pupils. It's not rocket science.

He's having a damn good week. A King and a Rat snake would bring in a good $30 even back in the late '70s / early 80s.

I'm sure when he's about 15 that he will really appreciate you putting pics of him in his drawers on the web.
