Learn me all about 4-wheelers

I think I want to get a 4-wheeler for this hunting season. Never owned one before, and don't know much about them. I will expect it to get me down some pretty long trails on WMAs but that's really about it. Some of these trails can get pretty muddy though. I don't need it to be particularly fast, but I'd like to be able to carry two climbing stands and gear and a second person when necessary. I can deal with it being a little uncomfortable, just so long as it gets me where I need to go. I don't know if I need a 4x4 or a 4x2, don't know anything about make/model either.
Obviously I want to spend as little as will get the job done reliably, but this means I also dont want to buy the cheapest ATV possible and have the damned thing strand me 5 miles deep in a swamp.
What exactly should I be looking for?

Some WMAs don't let you ride 4 Wheelers on them, keep that in mind. Also, there's a ton for sale on LASMAGs website. Don't buy one with a snorkel.

If you've never owned one before, buy a used one that's not beat all to hell. I'd get a mid ranged one in the 400cc-600cc class. If you're around water a lot, get manual shift.
I used to be a rep in the business back in the day (thus the handle). If someone gave me a blank check to go buy one, I'd get an Arctic Cat or a Yamaha. From describing where and how you'll be using it, if it doesn't have a wince, get one.

Tell me what kind of truck you have and if you do the maintenance yourself and I'll recommend you a bike based on that

We have a Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4.
Not saying this is the way to go as there are several brands and models that are all great. However, reasons for selecting this one were via learning from friends that learned the hard way:
1- 400 (350-450 range is good) its plenty big enough to haul a load (ive hauled two people, two deer, and two deerstands through a 2 mile swampy trail with zero struggle). But anything larger than 400 gets really heavy and hard to lift and manipulate in case of getting stuck.
2- 4x4. Self explanatory. One of the worse days ever can be getting stuck 5 miles in the middle of nowhere because you were a little too optimistic about how deep the mud was.
3- manual shift. This is the one I learned from many friends/lease members as we gave them countless rides back to camp when their electric shifters got wet and stopped working.

if you want a good bike for cheap, spend between 1800-2500 on a late 90's honda fourtrax 300 4x4. check fluids for white, don't buy one snorkeled. They're pretty bulletproof if the oil gets changed and they're not submerged.

I asked this same question on here about 2 years ago...sat on a 420 rancher and it was too small. Looked at Polaris...went overboard and got a Sportsman 850. Is it overkill? Yep. Is it badass and makes me smile everytime I ride it? Yep lol

Rancher 420, 4x4, foot shift. Some will say go big, but all I'd do with one of those big bitches is break shite.
I'm 6' and 290 lbs and I have no problems whatsoever carrying stands, deer, people, etc. My land is straight swamp and she trucks right along.

I would choose between Honda and Yamaha, the choice would come down to who give the best service plus how far away the shop is.

Funny story a muliline dealer told me once when talking about the durability of all the brands. Polaris was still having some growing pains at the time so he asks me "you want to see the difference? come with me to the service dept. We go in the back and he says on the left, go look in that big tool box where all the metric tools are to work on the Jap stuff, they ain't got a scratch on them. Now go look on the right at the standard stuff that the guys use to work on Polaris, the shite is already wore out and I just bought it."

I use my bike in exactly the same way you have described. I own a Suzuki Kingquad 400fs....fs is for foot shift. They make an automatic, but I prefer the fs, less stuff to break and it's what I grew up with. You'll definitely need 4 wheel drive. I bought this size bike b/c it fit my needs perfectly, didn't cost too much, and was small enough that I can man handle it by myself...I can lift up the front and back end without getting a hernia. Important if you ride alone a good bit. You'll also need a rear rack extension if you plan on carrying climbing stands, deer carts and another person etc. a winch is also a good idea if you'll be riding alone sometimes. Their cheap for a four wheelers and give you piece of mind. I've never had to use mine fwiw.

A rancher with mud tires, stick stoppers, a winch, and nice racks is the way to go for me

Honda Rancher 420 .
I have the Electric Shift but if I bought another Id go manual.
I have a warn winch on it but have never had to use it up here.
Climbs hills like a beast, hard to get it stuck,
Carries all you need.
