damn lawnmower wouldn't stay running today. Ran fine yesterday. would start, the start sputtering and quit. drained gas, checked to make sure that the fuel hose to carb was clean. seems like it is starvin for gas. how hard is it to take off carb and clean without messing it up. does the OB think this is my next step?

Check the air filter. How old is the gas? If it is from last year don't use it.

yea fuel might be the issue. like i said, it ran fine yesterday, but today I emptied the last of gas out of can to go mow, and it would not run. may have had some bad stuff in the bottom of the gascan

No sure what type of engine you have, but if possible take the bowl off the carb( if it's a Briggs).Usually a 10mm wrench will fit, take the bolt all the way out and give the bowl a little twist and it should come off.Once off there is a needle valve held in place by a pin, slide the pin to one side and the valve will come out.Once you do that, use some air from a compressor or a can of carb cleaner and squirt in the valve seat, but not too much pressure, then put back together, Oh and empty the gas tank and replace with fresh fuel...Good Luck!

What he said. Something is stuck in the carb needle seat not allowing fuel to get to the engine.

Sometimes taking the fuel bowl of is not required.
Sometime lightly tapping on the bowl with the handle of a screwdriver will dislodge whatever is stuck in there along with pouring a good amount of Seafoam into the gas to help brake up any other obstacles that may be hindering fuel flow.

If its a newer model mower than the carb will be sealed. Check the filter and fuel filter and hope for the best. A new carb is cheap though.

what really sucks is that my dad retired from Sears working for 21 years as a small engine mechanic and his most important thing for me as a kid was to teach me everything he could about lawnmower engines. Being a stupid kid I didn't want to learn anything he wanted to teach me.

Your jet is stopped up or your float is stuck. Tear it down and clean it. You may have poured some trash in the tank from the bottom of your gas can.

I have the same problem. Changed the air filter, spark plug, changed the oil, drained gas tank, cleaned carb, blew out the gas lines. No fuel filter or I would have changed that. The only thing I could find wrong was a busted seal, fixed that. Damn thing still wont run, its at the shop now. Probably cost me an arm and a leg to get it back... Hope you get yours fixed though, good luck
