OB mechanics - hoping you can help me.

I have about a 8 year old Briggs 22hp engine. It cranks up just fine, will drive about 20-30 yards or until i engage the blades. At this point, the engine starts to rev/surge up and down and then it eventually dies.

I took a look with my unknowing eyes, and it seems that the governor arm is going up and down.

Would this be a dirty carb OR a governor issue???

engaging the blades causes the problem?

engaging the blades expedites the problem. even without engaging, it will only get a little ways before dying.

Carb needs cleaning most likely.

Definitely don't mess with the governor. they can be a pain in the arse to get back right and unless the spring broke nothing wrong with it.

Do you wash the mower? Spray it with a hose or powerwasher? Common problem when that happens is water getting to the fuel float bowl under the carb. Just have to undo the small bolt or screw in the middle and drain it out. Also put a clear jar under it and let it run for a while if fuel is still being drawn from the tank. That will let you see water collecting at the bottom. Usually that's the problem I run into with small engines that die or surge once they've really warmed up (engaging the blades = more load = more heat).

First check the inline fuel filter. It's starving for fuel. Once engaging the blades, the engine is calling for more power, more fuel. Also check/replace the air filter. That can do that to the engine too!

rebuild or replace carb( latter if you do not know how to rebuild) still cheaper than paying someone

and stop using unleaded gas in your mower

Thanks guys. Will definitely check the fuel filter and air filter first, then clean the carb if necessary.

It did this once last year and magically cured itself the next day.

Are you advocating the use of leaded av gas in a mower?

It would cost me 70$ every time I cut the grass....and thats at the price from 7 years ago. Havent purchased that since I had a race bike.

A little chemtool and two stroke oil at a ratio of 128:1 keeps everything running fine around here.
