Yep. It's the instance of pure calmness, almost putting you to sleep, in the early afternoon... until you hear the sounds of a B-47 from the sky and look up to about 25 cupped... That's what creates a sickness in a duck hunter

I hunt in flooded timber on a public WMA so I have to put up with all the sky busters, novice hunters, and people that consumed lead throughout their childhood. So we can't wait until they leave so when can actually hunt in peace.

10:00 -10:30 is usually the time when most of them head back to the boat launch. That used to give us 1 1/2 hours until we had to quit at noon per the WMA regulations. I can't tell you how many ducks we killed between 11:00 and noon especially in those last 20 minutes.

Now the Arkansas Game and Fish, in their infinite wisdom, passed a regulation that you have to be off the water by noon. You can hunt til noon but you have to be off the water and out of the WMA by noon. How in the hell does that work? You need time to pick up decoys and all your other crap and motor back to launch and get the boat out of the water.

So our hunting time really ends about 11:00 which cuts back on our peace and quiet hunting.

This x 1000. This is one of the dumbest rules the ARGF has ever come up with. The best time to hunt timber is late morning after all the yahoos have left. Hunted timber in NEA last week, and most were gone by 9am. One day, we didn't kill a duck till 10:30.

Just a question for all you who like to stay late...how often does it really pay off for you? I'm fortunate enough where I hunt that we get plenty of shooting in early. Like real early. Many days we can have a limit by 6:30-7:00. But rarely many mallards. Typically woodies, teal, greys, and what not. I've stayed late a few times, but not much. And never until 11:00. Late for me is usually 9:30. Hunting primarily rice fields nowadays.

Btw, not bragging about killing limits early....just saying that typically that is the reason for us leaving early. That, or it's just that when you have large numbers of ducks flying around before 7:00, it's hard to sit through those few hours of nothing...brain keeps telling me it's done for the day. I'd much rather kill 3 mallards that work into the decoys well than a limit of fly-by woodies and teal.

Stop being impatient, stay past 9:30 more often and you'll find out.

I don't go into a hunt saying I'm going to stay for mallards. I'm also not eager to leave at 9. If I don't have anything to do I have no problem staying till 11 or like today I stayed till noon. Didn't work out today but it has in the past. Not at an extremely high rate of success. I also just enjoy being out in the blind and relaxing, especially when I'm with good company. It's not for everyone though.

Mach 316.

If you remember, AGFC had this regulation several years ago but it didn't last but a coule of years before they repealed it. Now they have enacted it again.

According to the AGFC biologist, they re-enacted the regulation for two reasons: 1) A recent survey showed that most were in favor of the the regulation to be off the WMA by noon. And 2). They wanted to give the ducks an extra hour of rest.

Did you see this survey? I sure didn't. i call BS on this survey. Who was the survey provided to? Tree hugging conservationists? Adjacent private landowners? I cannot believe the general hunting public was in favor of this new regulation.

And as we discussed in previous posts, most everybody has left by 10:30. There is not that much boat traffic to disturb the ducks between noon and 1:00.

It depends. If I know there are big ducks in the area and we have tons of teal early we will pass on teal. Some days if you have teal that's all you will have although most of my spots if you have teal around you've got mallards pins etc too. Other than a couple of the freshwater marshes I doubt too many south la guys have to worry about killing mallards though.

Lemme rephrase and maybe I'll make more sense in what I'm trying to ask...take 100 trips where you had good mallard hunts. What percentage of 100 trips would have been from say, 10-1? Do you kill just as many early, or is it primarily all late morning flights?

I duck hunt probably 40 days a season, and have done so for 7-8 years. But before that it had been 25 years since I did it with any regularity...and I can barely remember what happened yesterday, much less back then. I just find I'm far too busy these days, and I get antsy about stuff to be done when I'm sitting and not seeing any ducks flying.

Full moons hunting feeding spots we've killed a lot from 10-1 and I've had hunts where we didn't kill one before 10 and had a 4 man limit by 1130 or 1200. If it's frozen the field may not thaw until afternoon too. I'd say though 75% of the time if we are killing birds we will limit by 9-930 and have most of our mallards if they are there. If it's slow it might not matter how late we stay but you can usually count on at least one or two late mallard opportunities if you stick it out.

Ya. It's funny these surveys are never issued to the public. Oh well, I try to stay on the White if the water is right. I like being able to scout also. This rule definitely cuts that out.

Man, it's all what you enjoy doing. Several of the people I hunt with would rather shoot teal, etc and get out of there early. Most of the times I'll make em lay off till later for the big ducks. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm never upset on the days it doesn't. I just like being out there. I'm in no hurry to rush home, and do chores or watch tv. I'd rather be out there cutting up and decoying ducks. That fast and furious early morning flybyes can be fun on the opener, but nothing is better than watching big ducks work the decoys around 11 or so. They just seemed more relaxed. No shooting in the distance making em jumpy or people screaming at them everywhere. May try it sometime and see. You may change the way you hunt
