If you have enough sun, Bermuda is great. More maintenance, but yields great results. Centipede is just so easy..

(ETA: I manage Bermuda turf for a living, and have Centipede at my house.)

Also, I have thought about hydroseeding just around the house where the red clay is to get rid of it fairly quickly. Have no idea this costs though.

I could be wrong but I think it was about $0.08 / ft.

If you have 90% or better sunlight, Tifway is a good option. Can be maintained short, with a rotary mower, and is very traffic tolerant.

We have Tifway Bermuda...and I can't see where that stuff is drought tolerant at all. Unless it's drought tolerant if you water your yard at least once a week (which I don't)....

Maybe I'm misunderstanding my "drought tolerant lawn" the contractor put in....because it ain't so tolerant...and the weeds seem more tolerant than it is.

Sahara Bermuda is very drought tolerant, and I believe Lowe's carries the seed.

If you currently have centipede and don't like it, is there another type of grass that you can toss seed out or plant a couple pieces of sod that will overtake the centipede?

If you can get some Bermuda to establish, it will send out stolons and grow through the centipede. Won't choke it out totally, but then you can spray msma to knock out the centipede leaving you with the Bermuda.
