Large Yard- What Grass?

We will be moving into our house in a couple weeks, and trying to figure out what type of grass to plant. We live in Covington, and will have about a 2 acres to plant. I am thinking Bermuda and was curious if anyone else did this and what type of Bermuda they used.

My favorite of all is still st Augustine, as it is robust enough to cover the yard quickly and pretty shade tolerant.

Yeah but I don't think you can seed St Aug can you?
With 2 acres you are going to probably want something you can seed like centipede.

that is correct, I would buy some sod and just plant plugs into the yard...water it well and the whole yard will be covered in one summer.
I currently have centipede and it grows so slowly that I don't think you could get good coverage in a single year from seed.

Centipede was the one grass im not going with. I thought about St.Aug, but was thinking I would rather something I could seed to have some covergage in a few months for it not to just be a muddy mess.

you could get some coverage with seed, but I am afraid it will be too fragile to walk on much for another month or so.

For something large I like volunteer grass and keep it cut no one will care what kind it is.

Bermuda will be your best bet if you don't want to go with native or centipede. It's hardy, drought resistant, and recovers quickly when it does get damaged. I'd look at a tif variety or similar, although those tend to be started as sod, not seed. St Augustine is started by using the runners or sod, so that's not gonna be fun for a bigger yard. It does well in shade tolerance but if you don't have a lot of trees Bermuda is your better bet.

Thanks for the input. I have some trees, but yard will be in sun 90% of the time. Ive been thinking Bermuda, just didnt know exactly what species was better/best

I would buy enough St Augustine sod to place around the house slab, driveways, walkways, an a small front and back yard. This will prevent erosion from around the elevated pad. Seed the rest with Bermuda. It will take a long time to fill in but weeds will fill in some.
Don't wait till you move in. As soon as the yard is graded off, get the sod and seed down. To much other stuff you will need to do when moving in.

This exactly what I did. I have too large of a yard to sod. I put sod around driveway, walkways, and a large slope for erosion purposes. I then hydroseeded the rest.

Centipede would be what I would use. frick St. Augustine.

What variety did you hydroseed? Did you do it yourself and did it work well? I have about 3.5acres I'll need to do this with and just curious to hear someone else's experience.

For 2 acres, Bermuda will be way more economical. It grows well and is fairly easy to keep up with.
I just don't think it looks as good as st Aug or centipede. Especially if you edge. Gotta cut it short to make it look like a golf course.

I'm of the exact opposite opinion.
I have bermuda and find it requires more maintenance than my neighbors' St Aug on either side of me. I'm talking about weeds. I have to spray MSMA every so often. I find bermuda, when fertilized, is much prettier.

I did bermuda hydroseeded with a small mix of rye because I had it sprayed in October. It sprouted fast.

Did you do it yourself or have a company do it?
