Landscaping - what would you do with this mess?

So after neglecting this portion of landscape around my home, I'm finally going to do something about it. Or attempt to...

I hate that the crepe myrtles are so close to the house. They were "crepe-murdered" before I moved in so I continued to do it for a couple years. I tried to fix it and let them grow out but they still look like crap (beside the fact they need to be trimmed in the pic below).

The indian hawthorn and azaleas are overgrown and really starting to drown each other out. It looks like it's going to be tough trimming the indian hawthorn back because the inside of the bushes doesn't have leaves.

So, would/could you cut the crepe myrtles to the ground and try to let them come back or try to remove them altogether and replace with something else?

Will the indian hawthorn fill back in if I trim them down a good bit? Or should I remove those and/or the azaleas and replace with something else?

Aftermath of crepe murder:

Me trying to correct it without cutting them to the ground:

CMs look too close to house. I'd plant some new ones a little further out. Shape the hawthorns remove the right one

Yep. They'll eat the paint off your fascia boards and start rotting your eves.

the asymetry would drive me crazy personally. Why did the put in 3 azeleas in the middle, with 2 hawthornes on one side, and 1 on the other?

anyway, i would dig up the crepe myrtles, because the one on the left is too close to the house. leave the two hawthornes on each end, and do 3 knockout rose bushes inbetween.

replace the CM's with holly trees or something...

JMHO...keep in mind i know very little about landscaping

I thought you were needed to cut cm back every year?

Hmm, yeah unless I'm going to murder them, I think that might be best to remove and replace with something else. Any suggestions?

I might remove the crepe myrtles and the hawthorn on the right. Then everything will be symmetrical with the house. Maybe put something in place of the crepe myrtles.

Oh I'm with you on the asymmetry ... it kills me. I'm really not sure why it was planted that way.

I'll check out the holly trees. How big do they get?

Murdering Crape Myrtles is not recommended and results in weak growth and shortened lifespan.

Re-build your house farther from the crapes.

We're going to have to upgrade homes in the next couple years so just minimizing the ugliness is an option but I'd like to make it look nice.

I bet removing those CM is a pain in the arse.

Yup.... good luck murdering them. You almost can't kill them. I am redoing my landscaping in the front and just recently pulled all the damn bushes the dumbasses before me planted in the front. Apparently once they get a certain size the roots are a sum bitch.

Wonderful. Are you replacing them with another tree or bush?

What other tree do you cut back every year?

A few houses in my hood have something like this...they shape it like a christmas tree each year.

I've got four. Two on each corner of the house and one on one corner on the opposite end. And one stuck in the front yard by the road all by itself. The road one is fixing to be history. I can live with the others and hopefully planting some azaleas between em.

I just cut a CM down at my house. I chainsawed it level with the ground then built a fire on the stump.

It barely charred the green stump.

A landscaper told me how to get the best looking CM's - prune everything smaller than a pencil.

The flat top approach is horrible for the tree and the look.

Okay, not to be rude but does not look like you spend a lot of time in your flower beds, so keep it simple

I would dig everything out, make a big semi circle on each end and re plant the crepe myrtles, build up the bed and either replant the IH and Azazela after they have been trimmed nicely or get some new ones, but would not mix them up go with about 3-5 across between the crepes, if you go with something new i would suggest lorpedlums

No offense, it's true.

I've had the house for 4 years now and never trimmed any of it except the "crepe murder" that a friend said I should do. I was oblivious to the fact that anything needed to be done until I noticed shite getting out of control last year.

I had to look up the loropetalums... while doing so I noticed this little tree on the right. What is that and is it a bad idea to use this to replace my CM? Maybe I just need to drive around my hood and steal ideas from my neighbors.

Man if it was me I would just do a real neat trim up of all of it. Might want to dig one of the small plants and put something with a contrasting color in there. Red Barberry ? Take it to a pro nursery and ask them for a suggestion. Digging up a CM is a major PIA.
