A few months ago I clear cut the overgrown wooded area at the back of my backyard with a bush hog. Area is probably between .5 -.75 acres.

Well now that spring is here the weeds/growth is popping back up. What do ya'll recommended I put down in this area to keep anything from growing (I don't want to Updyke my trees either). I'm trying to achieve a look like in this picture. Basically I just want dirt, leaves, and pinestraw.

*Of note, I have a dog that I don't want to die either.

A lot depends on the area, and type of vegetation that grows there. You will never get to that state without a good heavy canopy high up though. I'd continue to bushhog the underbrush down. A good controlled burn, followed up a year later would do tons to make that happen. Problem is the small acreage for that.

The reason it looks like that in the picture is because the trees are shading out the ground. You are going to be spraying lots of RoundUp to keep it clear

A ton of poison ivy. Other stuff I don't recognize, but will grow to 8 feet or taller if left alone.

I've got a significant amount of trees. Not as many in picture though. The area in my backyard that became overgrown was unattended for probably 6 years before I moved in. I realize that with RoundUp it would be annual headache. I'm asking if anyone knows of a solution that doesn't require frequent reapplication.

Bush hog about 3 times a year - now, mid summer, and September. If you've got pines, the straw cover will get thicker as time goes on. I did this to an area behind my house and it got easier as time went on.

As said previously, once the overhead canopy shades the entire area you can get that look but anywhere the sun hits the ground you will have brush.

Round up by itself is only good for grasses, mix 2,4-d with it and that will do everything you are wanting to do.

Long-term you're gonna want a lot of shade and leaves on the ground. Short-term, round up should work with occasional bush hogging
