Been wanting a kayak for awhile, just trying to decide what type would be good for me. Sit in (SINK) or Sit on (SOTS).

My brother has a fishing kayak, and i'm sure i'll be doing some fishing with him, but i want one to take out on the lakes for the weekend, every now and then, and just cruise around.

Any suggestions?

Yeah just thinking this. I have a dog too, that i'd like to take out with me.

Now it's finding a good kayak. I'm not looking to spend a terrible amount. Definitely under $650.

Glad to see a kayak thread on here. SIKs do not have enough storage space for proper fishing, though they are frequently faster and certainly keep you dryer than the SOTs. The real question would be do you want a SOT or a canoe for fishing. Canoe has tons more space to carry gear, but is harder to paddle by yourself and more affected by the wind. they can also ship water. SOTs are faster, carry a decent amount of gear, and are self bailing, so you can fish in waves and surf without sinking or filling up the boat. I would say that canoes are the most versatile, but SOTs are fishing machines.

I have 2 SOTs, 1 SIK and a canoe(plus two bateaus). When dad croaks I'll have another 12 boats as his wife hates them in her yard.

stick with Craigslist. You can find a great deal on an SOT in the BR or NO area. Maybe use Searchtempest to cover more area. I bought 1 SOT on eBay and one on Craigslist, and drove to Mississippi to pick them up.

edit: canoe would be better for the dog. No where to sit in the SOT.

Well i think i've decided SOT. What is a decent kayak? I'm thinking it will probably be used 75/25 cruising/fishing.

I am partial to fast boats, because i travel far while fishing. I have a Native Manta Ray 14' and a Native Magic 14.5'. Long boats are good for distances. If you want to carry a dog, i would go with a Native Ultimate or a canoe. If just fishing/paddling, maybe a Jackson Coosa or one of those new Native Slayers. They are more stable for newcomers, but expensive.

Again, get on Craigslist and find a used boat. Ocean Kayak Prowler, Hobie, any of the above listed boats, etc.

that Perception 13' you linked looks perfect. Perception is a whitewater kayak company, but they are geting into the SOT arena. The Manta Ray I have was made by Liquid Logic, another whitewater manufacturer, and was their first step into fishing kayaks. It was so fantastic, that Native bought the mold and now sells them.

I would still look for a cheaper used boat, for your first one. No need to blow big $ then realize you do not like it.

I agree with others about a used kayak if your budget is $650. I screwed up and bought a cheap kayak to start, and almost never use it. I have a great canoe that's very fisherman friendly though. It's an Indian River tunnel hull, 14'. EXTREMELY stable. I built seats on front and rear that are flush with the gunnel, and then put adapters and swivel seats on that. I can stand on that level with no issue due to the tunnel hull stability.
