I purchased a used sit in 10ft fishing kayak a while ago and it has worked perfect for ponds/lakes. I really like the kayak, but in the future I want to be able to take it in out in deeper/saltwater areas. I was wondering if it is worth it to put more money into it (fish finder/outriggers/maybe trolling motor) or should I sell it and invest in a nicer sit on top. I am worried if I were to get caught in some waves or something that the kayak might fill up and sink.

This is this kayak plus a few more rod holders/milk crate/other cheap stuff.

Upgrade. You don't want to mess with outriggers...they just get in the way and are cumbersome.

Upgrade. What's your budget? I just sold my ascend because I'm upgrading to a pedal drive. I do mostly salt water. Paddling back against the current in the afternoon is a bitch. Pedaling is going to be nice. Pack and paddle and backpacker both do demos. I went to a demo today to see which one I liked. I highly recommend a demo.

Get a Hobie. You'll end up in one eventually anyway.

The best accessory upgrade you could possibly make is a Cajun anchor. I made one out of PVC. About 5 ft long. Drilled a hole in the top and attached a rope. Used a small hack saw to get a point on the other end. Rarely use and anchor anymore. That's the best thing you can do to your current setup.

I demoed hobies and slayer propels this past weekend. I don't see the hype with hobies. I thought everything about the slayer propel was better.

I thought the Outback was quicker than the Slayer and was easier to pedal. To each his own.

On the whole, hobie makes a better boat. The slayer propel isn't terrible but it's not easy to repair if shite goes wrong and there's alot more years of production behind hobie's product, thus alot more secondhand knowledge of how to fix things and you know exactly what to expect. But I don't like pedal drives to begin with so take that as you will.
