My dad and I both enjoy kayak fishing and go down to GI a few times a year. Looking for some ideas on what to get him for his kayak. He has most of the essentials - anchor, trolley, fish grip, collapsible net,.....

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Good suggestion if needed. They make a huge difference.

One of those milk crate setups for your gear and poles are nice.

A good small cooler. Got me a RTIC 20 for mine, but those are on a long backorder.

Speaking of accessories, what type of anchor are y'all using in the marsh? I picked up an 8ft stake out pole and think I'm going to need an anchor at some point.

Agreed, upgraded to a Werner Skagit Hooked 260 cm and it has made a world of difference

This is great for stealthy one handed positioning, tree limb/dock grabber, fish dispatcher, etc.

Can you use that as a catfish flipper?

Fancy paddle, I'm still using a $60 Academy one
Depth finder/GPS is handy
I use the hell out of my head lamp when launching before sunrise, a good quality one is nice to have
Can never go wrong with quaility rod/reel combo.

If all else fails, get him an Academy/Pack&Paddle/Backpacker/Masseys gift card and let him pick something out.

Currently using a ~4' PVC pole that I built but will be swapping it out for something around 5'-6' soon. I also keep a 4lb claw anchor with me that does well. I know several guys who carry dumbells or weights on a Choupique anchor system and they seem to constantly have issues holding in place in current or windy conditions.

I might actually need that. Thanks!

I don't carry an anchor anymore, but when I did, it was just a regular bell/mushroom anchor. Used a bruce anchor when setting up in Caminada pass, it worked well.

Stake out pole is a must. I have a 6' and an 8' park-n-pole. 8' is better if you are using it as a push pole, but it can be a little long at times. 6' is a little short to pole, but it more manageable overall. In the marsh, 6' is plenty to anchor in most spots.

I used to have a mini drift sock that I used to drift down deeper bayous and across bays, but I'm not sure what I did with it. It worked pretty well.

I needed that as well Saturday. Wind was brutal, and there was a bite in the middle of the lake. Sock would have had me cruising at a pretty good speed for that bite. I think anyway.

Thanks for all of the responses. He also has the crate, small cooler, decent paddle, and a pvc pole he made himself.

I like the gps/depth finder, headlamp, and mini drift sock ideas.
