Kayak buying tips...

I am thinking of getting my wife and I a couple kayaks to explore the rivers and bayous around Covington. I really don't know what to look for. Sam's has a 8' sit on top kind for 199.00.Anyone have suggestions. Thanks

8' wont track well, meaning each paddle will turn you toward a different direction.

A10 or D10 is what you're looking for it sounds like. I believe the A10's are going for $299. Great quality for that price.
Don't get an 8'. You'll be disappointed with its performance.

Won't be doing a lot of fishing. Mostly just cruising. So 10' is the minimum y'all would look at?

Yep. I have an Ascend D10 I modified the way I wanted for fishing and cruising.
I'd get the exact same thing if I'd be buying another one today.

I'm not a yak expert but I would say 10" is the shortest I would go. If all you are going to do is cruise you may want to look at a sit in kayak. They supposedly have a dryer ride.

Yea, they don't stay inflated.
I mean, if you want to drop a nice penny on a bad arse one that's white water quality like an AIRE I'm sure it would be great, but we're talking a couple grand here. My experience with $200-300 blow up rafts: drag the bottom, find dry land immediately.

I've been fishing in a kayak over two years now. One thing about a kayak is do not go cheap. If you buy the cheaper kayak it will cost you more in the end. You'll want to look for a few things.
First is comfortability and adjustability. Both are a must because sitting on the water paddling around you want to be comfortable. You need to be able to adjust it to fit your height, especially the foot pegs and seat. Its a must to really enjoy a kayak.
Second get good paddles. Don't go with a $20 paddle from academy, they are crap. Get you a name brand like Aquabound, Harmony, Bending branches (they make a good one for a decent price). You need an effecient paddle to make it enjoyable and not a constant workout. Trust me paddles are very very diffent from each other. Get the right legnth also. The paddle should measure to the top of your fingers when you are standing with your arm stretched out above your head
Third is size, small ponds, bayous etc go with 10-12 ft. Bigger bayous or open bodies of water you'll want 12-14ft. The longer the legnth the better they will track in the water on open bodies of water. 10 ft is alot smaller in the water when you are in it then it looks out of the water.
Good luck to you. If I were to recomment a brand it would be WIlderness Systems, Native, Jackson, or Redfish which is a great starter kayak

Right after my wife and I got married, I annoyed her for months to get a couple kayaks for us to cruise around in. Due to my past of buying sort of expensive items and losing interest, she said we could get some cheap beginner ones to see if we liked it. It was an 8' sit on top from academy. I upgraded a year later to another from academy, a 10 Pelican pursuit sit in, this past year I went with the Ascend FS12t. After getting used to the 12', my wife wanted to try it so I got in her 8'. It was absolutely worlds apart. We were in Lake P and I felt like a dang bobber bouncing up and down. The thing practically wants to turn when you turn your head. I looked over at her and she was pretty rock solid in the 12'. The 10' isn't bad, but I don't think I'll ever go shorter than 12.
