All these threads have me looking around for an "egg" style grill/smoker. I've never owned one, mainly because of the price point. BGE is out of the question in that regard. I looked at a Kamado Joe and think I prefer it anyway. But good lord, they're around 1200-1500 as well. Is there a viable option in the $500 range? Or is the quality that much worse? I've cooked on BGEs on several occasions for friends that don't know what they're doing. I know they're legitimate cooking tools. I just want to know if there is a cheaper option that will yield the same results.

ETA:
Like this Char-Griller (~$300)

There's one on the F&DB that I think some people have been happy with, Acorn I think. Don't know who makes it.

The akorn cooks just as good as the egg does, IMO.

I'm looking for this exact thing and the only drawback I can see from reviews is that the "build quality" is not as nice as the green egg. Yes it's a 3rd of the price, but if it's all wonky and rusting apart after a year, is it worth it at $300? Cooking wise, it appears to perform well.

Yeah, I've already got one rust bucket. Don't need 2.

The other one I'm referring to is a Char Broil Infrared that I absolutely loved at first. Everything on that thing is rusting up, and I've had a cover on it since day one.

Do you have one? If so, how long and how's it holding up?

I have a friend who had an acorn and now has a primo. He said the acorn was good but kinda tough to manage temps (hard to lock on, always adjusting). He thought it was just that type of grill in general (kamado). He was blown away at how much better/easier his primo was to use with regard to that.

But I agree, they're not cheap...

I've been reading a lot of reviews on this particular model, and it seems a lot of the air leak issues from the earlier models has been fixed. I might swing by Lowes later and see if they have a floor model I can examine.

I was in the same boat about 4 months ago. I did a solid 3 months of research beforehand and ended up pulling the trigger on a Vision Kamado. I could literally list 100 reasons why it is just as good as a BGE or KJ. They are all super heavy, well made kamados. the vision is made from the same high heat ceramic as the others. I'm 4 months in and i can't say one bad thing about it. ive done steaks, burgers, ribs, chicken, salmon and it is all the best food ive ever grilled. since buying mine, 4 other people i know have bought one based on my recommendation and trying food from it. they all love it. i will say that the big green egg accessories are all i use like the heat deflector, pizza stone, rib rack, etc because they are just better designed. the vision has a 5 star rating and is very well known. I have pasted the link to SAMs where i bought mine from. they are 100.00 cheaper there than if you buy it from any other place that carries them.

i looked at the acorn, but it is poor quality and will rust. it is only ceramic coated on the inside. a guy at work has one and he regrets buying it. he will get a vision like mine once his finally gives out completely.

check out kamadoguru.com. they too have reviews of the vision and can back up everything im telling you. let me know if you have any questions.

Just bought that exact one from Walmart for 280$ and I love it. Holds heat very well. It's the best value kamado grill IMO

Yes the air leaks have been adjusted. As far as the rust issue goes, I know a couple of people that have had the akron for over 3 years without rust problems.

The Vision looks super nice, and at about twice the price of the Char-Griller and half the price of a BGE or equivalent, I've got some thinking to do. Thanks for the curveball

I have one. Used it a few times so far, and I like it. There is a guy on Craigslist (Atlanta, GA) selling the Akorn, Cover, Wireless Temp guage and smoke plate for $300 (I paid him $250).

I can't remember the brand but I checked one out at Hotel and Restaurant Supply in Jackson while doing some commercial shopping and was extremely impressed. It was $650ish but had the heaviest lid of any cooker I've felt and that's including the BGE, Cajun cooker, and the SAMs Club one. The rep told me the heavier the lid, the thicker the ceramic, the better built the cooker.

I have had a Vision for two years with no problems. Came with a cover and still looks good.

I have the akorn, which is what you pictured and I've had it almost 2 years

There is no rust to speak of on it. It's an incredible grill for the money

The only part that ever sees rust is the cast iron grates if I don't keep them seasoned well

I've pretty much got the wife convinced this is a necessity. However, if I get this before I get a deal done on a new car for her, she might kill me.
