Is this normal for Sherburne/Public land in general?

Thursday I parked at Sherburne and went in to hunt. I hadn't seen any other cars around. About 30 minutes after I was set a dude comes walking past me, notices me in the tree, and keeps going past me. I was wondering if he came in from another road or something but when I got out he was parked behind 50 yards from me.

Now, I know it's public land and this is legal, but am I wrong to think this guy is a major prick? It wasn't as if the WMA was packed full of hunters.

You're lucky he didn't climb a tree 100 yards upwind of you.

If that kind of thing stresses you out, Sherborne isn't the place for you.

was this your first time hunting public land? People are inconsiderate dbags, especially hunters on public land. I avoid hunting public property like the plague.

Yeah, that's not strange at all. Unfortunately happens fairly often. If he was hunting squirrels, he definitely didn't give a frick. Hate to put it in those words, but it is the unfortunate truth. Many public land hunters just don't care if they mess another guy up or not.

I'm almost anal about it. If I see another vehicle down the ROAD I want to hunt on and I can't get at least a half mile away from him, I'm not going to go in. Don't want to take any chance of messing someone else up, and I would hope they would do the same for me.

Don't see anything wrong with it. He had a spot in mind that was past yours. I walk past people all the time hunting. You can't know where someone is going to be. How would someone know which side of road you were hunting?

That's what I would do as well. The WMA wasn't busy at all. There were pleny of spots.

So you're an a hole if the spot you want to hunt is 800 yds in and you happen to walk past someone who is 250 yds in? Did the guy start making all kinds of racket when he saw you or did he just keep walking. How was he supposed to know what tree you were going to be set in? If he didn't do anything to directly mess up your hunt, it sounds like you need to unbunch your panties. It's public land, stuff like that happens. The guy didn't get out of his vehicle with the intentions of trying to screw you up

That's a long way from someone especially just bowhunting.

Sounds like he may have already scouted that spot, he's probably sitting around telling his buddies about this prick who moved in on his honey hole.

Without knowing more about how far in you were and what exactly transpired, I don't have any problem with what he did. If he scouted and had a place in mind to hunt, he is going to hunt that spot as well he should. If he didn't intentionally mess up your hunt, he likely had no idea where you were exactly and didn't plan on walking past you.

It's not uncommon at all for the gun hunts, In fact it should be expected. Now bow hunting I really don't have any problems and I hunt mostly Sherburne.

It may just be my humble openion, but Sherburne is like almost 70,000 acres. There are roads and access point all over. If you have to hunt on top of sombody your just being a dick. Be prepared and have a back up plan if somebody's is in your spot, don't try and hunt on top of sombody there is plenty of room.

Well, Sherburne is only 43k acres, but I agree. Especially during the week. All of this "maybe he had the area scouted" and "if he didn't mess up your hunt, quit bitching" stuff is nonsense. It's called being a decent public land hunter. If the guy parked 50 yards from him, he knew there was someone in the area and just didn't care. I don't care if you have it scouted or didn't mess up my hunt, I was here first. I wouldn't walk past another hunter, and I don't want one walking past me.

This is the exact reason I have a half dozen or more spots scouted. If someone is hunting the first spot I want to hunt, I'll go somewhere else. I don't know where that guy is, so instead of trying to walk in there and possibly screw his hunt up, I'm going somewhere else. It doesn't matter if he's 250 yards in and I'm going 800 yards in.

Some things are unavoidable, like a public land dove hunt, or even duck hunting in some places. You are going to have someone close. Hell, either-sex gun hunts are the worst. But archery??? Come on. No need for that.

Sherburne has plenty of room if you have access to a boat. The only way I would hunt Sherburne is if I was hunting a place that required at least a long hike (.75) miles through the woods where there are no ATV trails in the area, or if I was using a boat to access areas that could not be walked to or biked to.

The problem with the walk in option is that Sherburne (and most other WMA's in LA) is that there are so many ATV trails that it's hard to get away from the big access points.

Another tip on Sherburne is try and hunt areas where you have to cross multiple sloughs to reach the area. Wear waders. That will cull out some of the cucks.

The OP could have walked 100 yards down a trail and put a stand and then the other just walked down same trail and went 1/4 mile further. Nothing wrong with that at all. If I see someone and I know o want be anywhere close to them I will walk past them no problem Very few places on sherburn where if you get 1/4 mile past someone that you will even see the same deer. 440 yards in thick cover. No way

Just admit it, you see no issue with a guy walking past another under any circumstances.

You don't even know where the other hunter went. You are just assuming he went a lot further.

I've hunted public for 30 years and very few times has someone done something that ticked me off while deer hunting. I hunt where I know people will not be. If that means I have to walk past someone I will. I do. Because most people walk about 100 to 200 yards from the truck and hunt. You have to walk past them

Now duck hunting and turkey hunting on public is a whole different animal. I have seen some silly shite and have gotten pissed plenty of times
