Not in Florida. They are everywhere down here.
My parents have one that lives in back of their property that has been there since I was a kid, back in the mid 1970's. They keep an eye on him and feed him occasionally.

Not as common as they used to be in the panhandle. Over the years I've had a few dig burrows on my place. A keystone species. LINK

My grandfather had a pair of them that lived in his dog pen when we lived in Mobile. We would feed them after school. My Dad said they had them when he was a kid so who knows how old those things were

It's against the law to disturb their habitat as well. I heard that from a rep for a company that placed conduit.....

Yup. We have some on our lease. Don't see as many as back in the day because the hatchlings don't stand a chance (fire ants, hawks, coyotes, pigs, etc.)
Don't mess with their holes... rattlesnakes like to hang out with them.
