I usually just shoot Kent fasteel and don't have any complaints. Anyone shoot hevi-shot or similar stuff regularly? Any noticeable difference over a fast steel load?

I shoot hevi shot/Kent tungsten for specs. Got 20 shells to start for this season. It's worth it to me.

I shoot Kent or estate or whatever's the cheapest in 2-3/4
my BS meter tells me the expensive stuff is just marketing, but even if it's marginally better it's not worth the money to me

It shoots very similar to lead. Much more deadly. To answer question about worth the price I would say it depends on situation. Shooting ducks up close then no. Long distance big ducks possibly but not if you shoot like king ranch. I shoot the hevi metal (steel/hevi shot mix) for geese and it makes a difference. Only hunting a few times a year then go ahead. Gets pricey if you are shooting every day.

I'm shooting Hevi Metal right now and they're great. I'm actually surprised how much I like them. I'm not sure I'm going to buy another case because they cost twice as much, but they're a clean shooting shell and I've been knocking the gray ducks dick in the dirt with em.

I've been shooting hevi-metal for a couple of years and I love it. If you trust your marksmanship skills you can really hammer them out to 50 yards on clean kills. It patterns well out of my gun. I was just posting in the other thread about the deal rogers has been running on them.

It performs like lead.

Can you shoot well enough to capitalize on that? If so than it might be worth it.

Where I hunt there's no advantage. We rarely get shots past 20 yards.

Not worth it to me. It takes me more shells than most to kill a duck so I need the most bang for my buck. Kent Fasteel.

I shoot hevimetal when I can get it at prices similar to kent. IMO it outperforms Kent (or similar 1500 fps steel) at 30+yd shots. BPS had heviometal on sale at $180 a case so I picked it up at that price. Would I pay $30+ a box – nope. If birds are in/over the decoys any quality load will do.
To finish off cripples I have a box or 2 of $10 steel.
You have to pattern your gun/choke as well – kent and hevimetal pattern well in my 391 w/ a mod choke. I tried black cloud a cpl of yrs back and it did not pattern well in my combo.

I haven't tried hevishot its waay too expensive for me

It as proven to be unreliable, for me. Soemtimes it doesn't shoot correctly and mis-fires while other loads run perfectly through my gun. I would stick to Fast Steel if I where you. If the birds are decoying like they should be anything, especially cheap stuff will do the trick.

OBC says yes. He reloads 20 gauge with "heavy shot", 12 gauge just isn't fair.

I'd say no, but I can kill them with steel.

I agree. I like Hevi Metal a lot and I've noticed a difference between its performance in killing ducks dead vs. cheaper loads, but it's not enough for me to justify it unless it's either given to me or I can find it at a cheaper price. I found a case for $178 a couple weeks ago though, so I ordered one.

moon - that's the key I find very few cripples w/ hevimetal. I like it a lot and I hunt big open deep water and cripples are a PITA. So anything to reduce cripples helps me and the dog a lot.
I find birds are feet up with it while w/ a good 1500 fps load they may be dead.
I use 3" shells too in a younger dumber time I shot 3.5s .....
